What is The Evil Within?

The Evil Within is a survival horror game developed by Tango Gameworks and released in 2014. Directed by Shinji Mikami, it follows a detective who, after an outbreak of violence at a clinic, is pulled into an unpredictable nightmare world. The perspective stays mostly behind the character, but ammo and other supplies are deliberately scarce.

The focus is on combining exploration, nerve-wracking combat and dealing with dangerous traps. Shooting alone won't get you very far. Avoiding enemies or using the environment to your advantage is an essential part of the gameplay.

Platforms

The original The Evil Within has five native platform versions: PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Bethesda lists exactly these systems in its official platform overview. The Steam release covers the PC version, while the Sony and Microsoft stores carry their respective console products.

A PS4 version that runs on a PS5 through backward compatibility does not become a native PS5 game as a result. Likewise, the Xbox One version on Xbox Series X|S is not a separate Xbox Series release. For Switch or Switch 2, no native release of the original has been confirmed.

Gameplay

Sebastian must watch enemies, move carefully through tight spaces and make his scarce ammo last. The Evil Within mixes direct confrontations with sections where it makes more sense to avoid danger. Traps can be an immediate threat, but they can also be used against creatures.

The world is not consistently stable. Rooms change shape, doors and paths unexpectedly lead to new places, and the story deliberately plays with uncertainty about what is really happening around you. These changes are part of building tension rather than a classic freely explorable open-world system.

DLCs and expansions

The expansions The Assignment and The Consequence tell a two-part story with Sebastian's colleague Juli Kidman. Both add perspectives and information to the main campaign and place more emphasis on carefully evading danger. In Europe they were released in March and April 2015, with the PlayStation Store releases sometimes following a day after PC and Xbox.

The Executioner was released as another standalone DLC in late May 2015. The Season Pass bundles the three larger expansions. Cosmetic or small extra packs are not the same as these three content expansions. The expansions require the base game on the matching platform.

System requirements

Steam lists a quad-core Intel i7-class processor or equivalent for the historical Windows version, 4 GB RAM, a graphics card at GTX 460 level with at least 1 GB VRAM and DirectX 11. According to Steam, 50 GB of free space should be available for installation, even though the installed files are listed at around 41 GB there.

A graphics card from GeForce GTX 670 onward, or comparable hardware with 4 GB VRAM, is recommended. The original specs list Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 in 64-bit, while the current Steam client has its own newer OS requirements. Historical hardware specs therefore don't replace checking today's store and driver environment.

The details apply to PC (Windows).

Sebastian Castellanos and the Disturbing Reality

Detective Sebastian Castellanos investigates a brutal incident at a psychiatric facility with colleagues. The investigation spirals out of control when an overwhelming threat appears and Sebastian awakens in a warped environment, where creatures, traps and mysterious places await him.

The story unfolds through encounters, documents and events across the chapters. The character Juli Kidman, who already plays a role in the main game, is explored in more depth in two standalone story expansions. If you want to experience the plot for the first time, treat these add-ons as a companion perspective rather than a replacement for the main campaign.

Why caution is part of survival

The Evil Within combines its eerie scenes with a real resource problem. Supplies and ammunition are not unlimited. If you use everything too early, you may be much worse prepared for a later encounter. Observing, sneaking around and using existing traps are therefore not minor details.

The way rooms and enemies change suddenly makes a purely routine style of play harder. The goal is not to defeat as many enemies as possible per minute, but to find the next safe path under uncertain conditions. In single-player, nobody else shares these decisions.

Single-player, not co-op horror

The Evil Within is built as a pure single-player adventure. Sebastian is controlled from a third-person perspective, while the story and enemy placement are designed for one person playing alone. The expansions partly switch the playable character and focus, but they do not make the base game a co-op title.

Cloud saves and Remote Play on individual platforms are convenience or streaming features, not evidence of a multiplayer system. The official Steam listing names single-player, and the Xbox Store also lists a single-player mode.

Language, subtitles and accessibility

The PC version on Steam lists German menus, German subtitles and German voice-over. For other languages, the store table distinguishes between interface, audio and subtitles. On consoles, the scope and availability can vary depending on the specific product or store region.

Steam also lists available subtitles or captions, Steam Cloud saves and achievements. The Xbox Store lists several accessibility features, but the product overview used here does not explain all of them in detail. These details do not support a blanket guarantee for every historical platform.

Telling apart base game, Season Pass and bundle

The base game includes the original Sebastian campaign. The Season Pass and the three major DLC episodes expand it, but they are not a separate new platform release of the main game. Steam also offers the original in a bundle with The Assignment, The Consequence and The Executioner.

When comparing product pages, check whether it is the base game, an expansion pack or a bundle. The name of a bundle does not replace checking the native platform. The PS4 version on a PS5, or the Xbox One version on an Xbox Series, remains a compatible older version in each case.

Shinji Mikami, Tango Gameworks and Bethesda

Tango Gameworks developed The Evil Within under the creative direction of Shinji Mikami, who had previously shaped the Resident Evil series. Bethesda Softworks published the game. The add-on content released in 2015 is still part of the base game and is not a separate re-release.

The Evil Within 2 followed in 2017 as a standalone sequel. It is not treated as DLC, a remaster or an alternative edition of the first The Evil Within. The developments, platforms and commercial products of the two games must be checked separately.
