The Long Dark: Tales from the Far Territory

Tales from the Far Territory is the paid expansion pass for the survival mode of The Long Dark. Three new regions and three narrative exploration tasks add to Great Bear Island. The pass requires the base game and has been complete since the sixth content part on Dec 2, 2024.

The DLC launched for PC on Dec 5, 2022, came out for PlayStation and Xbox on Mar 30, 2023, and for Nintendo Switch on Aug 1, 2024. The sixth and final content block was released on Dec 2, 2024.

The expansion pass is listed for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. A matching base game version is required for each platform. The Switch version began with the first four parts and received the remaining content later.

The expansion expands the open survival mode: cold, weather, wildlife, weight and scarce supplies determine the journey. Far from the familiar regions of Great Bear Island, abandoned mines, airfields and high-altitude routes lead into the Far Range. Radio hints and longer objective chains add clear tasks to free exploration.

The rules of Survival Mode still apply during the three Tales. The expansion is single-player content and not an additional Wintermute episode.

The pass was released in six parts: Forsaken Airfield, Signal Void, Frontier Comforts, Buried Echoes, Last Horizon and Broken Silence. Initial new regions and special weather phenomena grew into a package with three larger survival stories, additional gear, and travel and trading options.

Since Broken Silence on Dec 2, 2024, the expansion pass has been complete and is offered as a single connected DLC. The free base game changes released alongside it are not the same as the paid components.

You need the base game and, according to Steam, at least a dual-core Intel i5 at 2 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Intel 4xxx graphics with 512 MB video memory and 16 GB available storage. Recommended are a Core i7 at 2.6 GHz, 8 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 555 with 1 GB video memory.

Steam also lists requirements for macOS and Linux. The old Windows 8 details are outdated: since 2024, the current Steam client only supports Windows 10 or newer.

Forsaken Airfield is a vast high plateau with a remote airfield, hangars and dangerous weather. The Zone of Contamination leads into a closed mining facility full of toxic residue. Sundered Pass opens up steep mountains and an abandoned weather station. Transfer Pass and Far Range Branch Line serve as connecting routes.

The different regions call for new gear and supply decisions. Open terrain, toxic hazards and high altitudes each require different routes.

The three major narrative task series are called Signal Void, Buried Echoes and Last Horizon. They lead from mysterious radio signals and hidden supply stores to the secrets of the mine and the remote mountain region.

These Tales link fixed objectives to the open survival world. They are neither a standalone story mode nor pure collection tasks: on the way, cold, supplies, wildlife and the risk of losing your gathered gear still apply.

With the Handheld Shortwave you can follow radio hints at Aurora or Glimmer Fog and track down hidden caches. The travois is a buildable sled for larger supply loads, but it costs agility while pulling. Additional clothing, tools and recipes support long-term planning.

Trader Sutherland offers rare goods in exchange via radio messages. The instant camera lets you take photos in different film styles, which can be collected in an album. Systems like these extend the long-term survival flow beyond the three Tales.

The new Far Range regions, Tales and several special mechanics are part of the paid expansion pass. At the same time, owners of The Long Dark and Survival Mode received free changes such as reworked resource distribution and additional base features.

The Safehouse Customization from Broken Silence is explicitly free for all players. It lets you move, decorate and add handmade furniture to the furnishings in many shelters. The expansion pass is not required for this feature alone. Other parts of the final update, such as the trader, remain part of the paid DLC.
