Threads of Time

Threads of Time is a turn-based role-playing game from Riyo Games. A party of characters from different eras travels through time to stop a threat to the past, present and future.

The game combines hand-drawn pixel characters with three-dimensional landscapes. Battles rely on group attacks and abilities that affect the flow of time.

Threads of Time is due out in summer 2027 for PC, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S. Riyo Games announced the release window together with the two Nintendo versions.

PC, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S will receive standalone versions of Threads of Time. Both the original Switch and Switch 2 were explicitly named in the Nintendo Indie World presentation on Oct 28, 2026.

The PC version is sold through Steam. A PS5 version is not among the announced platforms.

Battles are turn-based. You control a group of characters, combine their abilities and try to break your enemies' defenses. The development team focuses on cooperative attacks rather than a real-time action combat system.

The PC version requires a 64-bit system and DirectX 11. These technical requirements apply to the Steam version.

Time manipulation is one of the tactical tools in Threads of Time. The characters use powers that throw enemies off balance and open up their defenses. This sets up combined attacks by the group.

Combined attacks link the abilities of several party members. The makeup of your party therefore decides not only individual attacks but also possible combinations. The official gameplay footage shows this teamwork as the core of the turn-based battles.

The Time Knights are meant to protect the timeline from a threat. On the journey through different eras, heroes whose fates are intertwined join together. Behind the changes in history lies a conspiracy that affects several eras.

Rye is a swordsman from the year 1000. After an attack on his homeland, he learns of his connection to the Time Knights. Luna supports him with magic, while the mysterious Aria seems to know more about possible paths into the future.

Rin comes from the year 2400 and fights powerful corporations as a shapeshifter. The prehistoric Bo wants to reconcile humans and dinosaurs. Barza, meanwhile, lives as a sky pirate and searches for the legendary ship Needle.

The characters' different places of origin are part of the story and of their perspectives on time travel.

The journey takes you to prehistory, to the year 1000 and to a future in the year 2400. Dinosaurs, airships, megacorporations and technological metropolises do not simply sit side by side: the story connects events from widely separated periods.

In the year 1000, the population suffers under the Grand Duke of Achren. Smugglers and sky pirates try to get around his rule. In the year 2400, powerful corporations control life. Another setting leads to the underground city of Haven, whose residents must avoid the surface.

Threads of Time combines two-dimensional pixel characters with three-dimensional settings. Riyo Games uses Unreal Engine 5 for lighting, landscapes and staging. The characters and battles stay visually close to classic Japanese role-playing games.

More than 100 specially composed music tracks accompany the journey through the eras. Nintendo cited this scope in its presentation on Oct 28, 2026.

German on-screen text and subtitles are announced for the PC version. Steam also lists English, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese, among others. A full German voice-over is not listed there.

Threads of Time is a single-player role-playing game. You assemble a group of heroes for the story. Steam lists a single-player mode and no online or co-op features.
