What is Tiny Tina's Wonderlands?

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a standalone fantasy loot shooter from Gearbox Software. Tiny Tina runs a pen-&-paper adventure world as an unpredictable game master, in which a self-created Fatebinder faces off against the Dragon Lord. The game takes over the collection of randomly generated gear from Borderlands, but makes magic, melee and freely combinable classes central parts of the combat system.

The journey leads through a walkable overworld with towns, optional encounters and dungeons. Although the humor and characters are reminiscent of Borderlands, it is a standalone game, not an expansion for Borderlands 2.

Release

The game was released on Mar 25, 2022 for PC via the Epic Games Store and natively for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The Steam version followed on Jun 23, 2022. The later Steam date is therefore not a new console release and not a separate game generation.

After launch, four Mirrors of Mystery expanded the repeatable combat; the fourth expansion, Shattering Spectreglass, also added the seventh class, Blightcaller.

Platforms

The native versions include PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. On PC, the game first appeared on the Epic Games Store and later on Steam. Buying a console game for PS4 or Xbox One is not the same as a separate native PS5 or Xbox Series version.

Comparing the commercial versions, there are five platform versions of the base game. Standard, Next-Level and Chaotic Great are editions or content bundles, not additional game generations.

Gameplay

Firearms, spells with cooldowns and melee weapons intertwine. Enemies drop different gear and upgrades, so the build's makeup keeps changing throughout the campaign. The Fatebinder gains experience, develops skills and explores optional areas of the fantasy overworld alongside main missions.

Typical of the game is the combination of directly controlled first-person shooter combat and role-playing stats. Spells don't replace firearms but create additional tactical options, such as controlling enemy groups or elemental damage.

DLCs and expansions

The Season Pass bundles the four Mirrors of Mystery: Coiled Captors, Glutton's Gamble, Molten Mirrors and Shattering Spectreglass. These are mostly repeatable combat and dungeon challenges with bosses, their own loot and cosmetic rewards, not four large additional main campaigns.

Shattering Spectreglass adds the Blightcaller class, new character creation options and the boss Redmourne. The Season Pass is included in the Chaotic Great Edition; the individual add-ons may also be offered separately, depending on platform and store. The base game is required for the DLCs.

Classes and multiclass builds

The base game offers six character classes, each with its own skill tree and distinctive class mechanic. During the campaign, a second class can be combined. This creates builds that weight spells, companions, critical hits or elemental damage effects differently, for example.

The expansion Shattering Spectreglass unlocks the Blightcaller as a seventh class. Its focus is on status effects, poison and elemental damage. It is a permanent expansion feature and not part of the original base class set.

Chaos Chamber: endgame and rewards

After the campaign, the Chaos Chamber forms a repeatable endgame mode. Several randomly combined combat rooms, mid-bosses and a final boss make up a run. Between rooms, players choose portals that affect the course of the run.

Crystals from combat and side quests can be invested in advantages during a run or saved for rewards. Curses increase the difficulty but can change the chance of better loot. After successful runs, Moon Orbs are used, among other things, to reroll enchantments. The structure makes the Chaos Chamber a long-term gear and build system rather than a one-off story chapter.

Co-op, groups and crossplay

The campaign can be played solo or online with up to three other players. With cross-platform multiplayer, Gearbox links the PC, PlayStation and Xbox versions. Loot distribution and class roles give groups room for different approaches.

The Steam version also supports crossplay. This must be distinguished from cross-platform ownership or transfer of save games: when switching between Steam and Epic on PC, a manual migration of save games was required.

Editions and included content

The Standard Edition includes the base game. The Next-Level Edition is a commercial edition with additional content, but not a standalone sequel. The Chaotic Great Edition especially bundles the Season Pass including four Mirrors of Mystery as well as other digital extras.

When choosing, you should distinguish between a full game version, an edition upgrade and individual DLCs. Even though different editions are available on the same native platform, they are catalogued as the same base game with different contents.

Game series

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands was developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K. The main character Tiny Tina is known from the Borderlands series. In terms of content, the game builds on the fantasy role-playing idea of Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, but tells a standalone story about the Dragon Lord.

The shared origin explains the humor, loot hunting and shooter mechanics. However, the class-based fantasy focus and the Chaos Chamber give Wonderlands its own structure.
