Borderlands 3 was first released on Sep 13, 2019 for Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Optimised versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S followed in November 2020. On Oct 6, 2023, Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition was released for Nintendo Switch.

Gameplay

Borderlands 3 combines first-person shooter combat with RPG progression and a huge, procedurally generated variety of weapons. Each of the four Vault Hunters has their own active abilities and skill trees. Besides Pandora, the campaign and side missions lead to other planets; level synchronisation and instanced loot make playing together easier despite different character levels.

DLCs and expansions

After launch, Borderlands 3 was expanded with four major campaign expansions as well as Designer's Cut and Director's Cut. This content extends the campaign, abilities, game modes and endgame activities. The Nintendo Switch Ultimate Edition bundles the base game with all six major add-ons.

Co-op and crossplay

Borderlands 3 supports online co-op with up to four players and, depending on the platform, local split-screen. Via SHiFT matchmaking, crossplay is available between Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Mac and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. The Nintendo Switch version supports local and online co-op for two players, but is not part of this crossplay list.
