What is Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition?

Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is the technically revised remake of the 2011 historical strategy game. The core principle remains: on a turn-based campaign map you manage a Japanese clan, negotiate with neighbors and plan campaigns. When armies meet, you lead their units yourself in real-time battles.

The new edition includes the original Sengoku campaign as well as Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai. An external development studio carried out the technical remake. Creative Assembly developed the original from 2011, while SEGA published the new edition. Graphics, controls and the number of playable factions have been changed. The Complete Edition is a standalone PC product, not a patch for the original Steam version.

Platforms

The Complete Edition released on October 13, 2026 for Windows PC. At launch it was offered via Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store. On Steam, the remake has since been removed from sale, while the original SHOGUN 2 is available again. Availability in other PC stores may differ.

On Steam, the original offer of the Complete Edition also included the classic game with its regular expansions. The versions on GOG, Epic and Microsoft, by contrast, included only the remake. The Blood Pack was not included for age rating reasons.

Feral Interactive has announced a native macOS version for Q1 2027. The Microsoft Store edition is a Windows version, not an Xbox console version.

Gameplay

A campaign alternates between managing provinces and fights on land and sea. You move armies and agents across the map, negotiate alliances, trade and build castles and economic buildings. On the battlefield, results depend on terrain, formation, morale and how the troop types work together.

The Complete Edition does not change this foundation into a different genre. Instead, it expands battle controls with movement and turning commands known from newer Total War games. An additional bird's-eye view makes it easier to get an overview. On the campaign map, diplomacy talks include a quick overview of possible agreements.

DLCs and expansions

The three major campaigns show different periods of Japanese history. Rise of the Samurai is set during the Genpei War from 1175, the original SHOGUN 2 campaign in the warlike Japan of the Sengoku period, and Fall of the Samurai during the upheaval toward modernity in the Boshin War.

In addition, the regular original expansion and faction packs are included. According to SEGA, the Blood Pack is not part of the bundle due to age ratings. The previous original version with its DLCs remains playable for existing owners. The additional content is therefore not a new, separately announced story expansion from 2026, but part of this new complete edition.

System requirements

Steam lists the following as minimum requirements for the Windows Complete Edition: Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i3-8100, 8 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 1060 with 3 GB VRAM and 70 GB of free storage. DirectX 11 is required. These details refer to the new version and should not be equated with the requirements of the original SHOGUN 2.

As the recommended configuration, the store lists Windows 11, AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, 16 GB RAM and a GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER. The stated performance targets are the store's configuration notes, not an independent benchmark. For the Mac version planned later, separate requirements from Feral may apply.

64-bit, display and cameras

The move to 64-bit is meant to improve use of modern PC architecture. Creative Assembly also mentions new lighting, shadows, textures and refreshed visuals for landscapes and units. The UI was reworked for freely adjustable scaling, including 1440p and 4K. Ultrawide resolutions and a borderless fullscreen mode are supported.

In addition, there are adjustable camera heights for land and naval battles, reworked cutscenes and modern anti-aliasing options. Which frame rates can be reached on a given PC depends on the hardware. These technical changes were developed for the Complete Edition and were not automatically carried over to the old SHOGUN 2 client.

New faction selection and campaign rules

The new edition unlocks more than 50 minor factions as regularly playable clans. This makes groups available that were not part of the normal selection in the previous version. The selection is spread across the SHOGUN 2 main campaign and the two major historical campaigns.

A new setting for the Realm Divide changes the timing or intensity of alliance reactions against an overly powerful faction. Creative Assembly explicitly also allows a weakened or disabled variant. Diplomacy received quick access to agreements that are likely to be achievable. These changes affect the long-term campaign flow.

Mod.io and the separation from existing mods

The Complete Edition integrates Mod.io for community expansions. According to SEGA's explicit statement, mods developed for the original SHOGUN 2 are not compatible with the new version. If you rely on an established collection of older modifications, you should therefore not replace the original version hastily.

The original SHOGUN 2 and its mods remain accessible unchanged. Two technically different versions therefore exist side by side: the classic installation with its existing expansions, and the modernized version with its own mod support. Automatic transfer or compatibility of existing saves is not guaranteed by the sources cited here.

Language settings and accessibility

Creative Assembly has added options for changing the color of controls. Predefined profiles for deuteranopia, protanopia and tritanopia, as well as a custom color adjustment, are planned. In addition, there are scalable menus and a separate choice of text and voice language.

The Complete Edition includes newly recorded full Japanese and Chinese language versions. Steam also lists German text and voice-over for the offered PC version. These details refer to the built-in language and display options, not to player-made translations.

Co-op and competitive battles

Alongside single-player campaigns, SHOGUN 2 in the Complete Edition supports cooperative and head-to-head campaigns. The Avatar Conquest mode lets you deploy your own commander with progression and new equipment in online battles. For custom battles, the official product description lists lobbies of up to eight people.

The stores list online and LAN multiplayer features. These should be viewed separately from the historical campaign, which can be played alone or with one other player. Neither console crossplay nor cross-platform shared save games are guaranteed for this edition.

Game series

SHOGUN 2 is part of Creative Assembly's historical Total War series. The original strategy game was released in 2011 and combines politics, economy and turn-based conquest with real-time battles.

The 2026 Complete Edition is a standalone technical remake. SEGA removed it from Steam sales in October and returned the original version as a separately purchasable game. Versions already bought remain playable. The mods developed for the original are not compatible with the Complete Edition.
