Tribes of Midgard

Tribes of Midgard is an action RPG with survival and crafting systems set in a colourful world of Norse mythology. As an Einherjar, you gather resources, craft equipment and fight monsters and giant Jötnar.

The game can be played alone or in online co-op with up to ten players. Saga and Survival set different priorities.

Released on Jul 27, 2021 for PC, PS4 and PS5. The native versions for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S followed on Aug 16, 2022. Nintendo Switch was released in Europe on Sep 1, 2022.

This means six separate native platform versions have been released.

Tribes of Midgard is available for Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. The PlayStation and Xbox generations each have their own versions. A standalone Switch 2 release is not mentioned.

A round begins with exploring a procedurally built world. You gather resources, fight creatures and craft better weapons and armour. The further you venture into the wilderness, the more dangerous the enemies become. In Saga mode you must return in time to prepare the village for the next night.

Tribes of Midgard offers additional digital content such as the Deluxe Content Pack, pre-order content and a soundtrack. These extras complement the base game. The major overhauls of the game modes, including Survival 2.0, were instead released as regular game updates.

The minimum requirements call for an Intel Core i5-2300 or AMD FX-6300, 8 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 560 with 1 GB or a Radeon HD 7770 with 1 GB. DirectX 11 is required for graphics. 8 GB of free storage and a broadband internet connection are needed. Steam lists the GeForce GTX 970 and Radeon RX 480 among the recommended graphics cards.

In Saga mode you protect the village and the Yggdrasil seed from nightly attacks by Helheim creatures. At the same time, resources must be gathered, defences built up and powerful enemies defeated. The growing pressure of the approaching winter means you have to weigh up expeditions against defending the village.

Survival mode focuses on free exploration, building and progress at your own pace. Since the fundamental overhaul Survival 2.0, there is no longer a village that must be defended every night against waves of attackers. Individual Helheim creatures can still appear at night, but they do not attack the Yggdrasil seed in the village.

Resources from the environment are needed for weapons, armour and other equipment. In Survival mode you can build your own Viking home and shape the surroundings to your liking. The Allforge serves as an important starting point for crafting.

In Saga mode, eight specialised classes are available for you to define your fighting style. In Survival mode, progression is instead built around a system with 90 unlockable abilities. This means not only the pace differs between the modes, but also character development.

Combat runs in real time. You use self-crafted equipment against regular monsters, Helheim creatures and particularly large enemies. The Jötnar play a central role in both main modes, but are approached differently: in the open Survival mode they wait in their own arenas.

The landscapes are procedurally assembled and contain resource areas, dungeons, secrets and dangerous enemies. Discovery and loot are as much a part of progress as preparing for larger battles.

Tribes of Midgard supports single-player and online co-op for groups of up to ten people. Tasks such as gathering resources, defence and defeating large enemies can be tackled together. A local co-op mode is not offered on the PC store page.

The Inferno Saga expansion brought a comprehensive redesign of the Survival mode on Aug 16, 2022. Since then, freer building, longer day cycles and a changed system of giant encounters have been permanent features of the game.

On PC, Tribes of Midgard offers a German user interface and German subtitles. English voice acting is included. The Steam version supports online co-op and achievements.
