Valkyria Chronicles 4

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a tactical single-player role-playing game set in the fictional Europe of the Second Europan War. The focus is on Squad E of the Atlantic Federation under Claude Wallace. Their unit fights against the Empire, while a large-scale offensive keeps pushing deeper into enemy territory.

Battles combine planning on an overview map with direct control of individual soldiers. Between missions, relationships within the squad keep developing.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 was released in the West on Sep 25, 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The four versions share the same main story about Squad E. The PC version is available through Steam.

The Complete Edition is now offered on Steam. Along with the main game, it includes additional missions and more downloadable content.

The game was released for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. On Switch, you can play on the TV as well as in handheld and tabletop mode. The PC version supports, among other things, high resolutions and customizable keyboard and mouse controls.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is built for single-player missions. Shared online battles or a competitive multiplayer mode are not part of the game.

In the BLiTZ system, commands are planned turn by turn, but the selected characters are then moved directly across the battlefield. During an action, you need to use cover, watch your limited movement range and carry out attacks. Enemies also react to movement within their line of fire.

Scouts, shock troopers, tank hunters, engineers and snipers each have different roles. Grenadiers are new and can hit enemies from longer range with indirect fire. Vehicles and support options expand tactical possibilities.

The Complete Edition combines the campaign with the larger add-on content of Valkyria Chronicles 4. This includes, among others, “A Captainless Squad”, “The Two Valkyria”, “Expert Level Skirmishes”, “Squad E, to the Beach!” and “A United Front with Squad 7”.

The expansions bring additional missions and stories with familiar characters. On Nintendo Switch, several of this content was also released separately. Which expansions are included depends on the edition you buy.

The PC version requires at least 4 GB RAM, around 36 GB of free storage and a GeForce GTX 650 Ti graphics card with 2 GB of video memory. SEGA also lists an Intel Core i3-6100 or a comparable AMD model and DirectX 9.0c.

The original requirements list Windows 7 64-bit. However, the current Steam client requires Windows 10 or later.

The makeup of Squad E determines which routes and attacks make sense on a map. Scouts reach distant targets, heavy infantry keeps enemies at bay, and tank hunters specialize in vehicles. Engineers support the other soldiers, while snipers take out single targets from a safe distance.

Instead of simply moving each unit one after another, command points must be distributed between units. This lets you combine key attacks or cover several positions at once.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 offers German on-screen text and subtitles. For voice acting, players can choose between English and Japanese. French, Italian and Spanish are also available as text languages.
