Gameplay
Wingspan is a turn-based engine-building game for one to five players. Cards are placed in three habitats, where they boost actions for gathering food, laying eggs and drawing more cards. Bonus cards and round goals provide extra points.

DLCs and expansions
The digital version includes several major expansions of the board game. European Expansion and Oceania Expansion expand the card pool and strategic options. Since Jun 16, 2025, the Asia Expansion adds more East Asian birds, bonus cards and the Duet Mode, which is designed specifically for two players.
There are also decorative packs with backgrounds and player portraits, which are separate from the gameplay expansions.

Multiplayer and cross-platform
Wingspan supports single player as well as local and online matches for up to five players. The Steam version offers online PvP, local multiplayer, online and local co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer. The PlayStation version also supports cross-platform multiplayer.
The Asia Expansion adds the Duet Mode for two players; it can be played offline and online.
