In Ultima VIII: Pagan, the Avatar is stranded in a foreign world after the Guardian banishes him from Britannia. Four powerful elemental titans rule Pagan, and their followers bring their own rituals and dangers. To return home, the Avatar must understand the powers of these titans and make use of the Guardian’s influence.
Exploration, combat and magic on Pagan
The eighth main entry in the Ultima series combines a fantasy role-playing game with direct action. You explore towns, caves, ruins and dungeons from an isometric-looking perspective, hold conversations, collect equipment and fight undead, monsters and other enemies in real time. Unlike its predecessors, the Avatar travels largely alone. Climbing, jumping and moving objects play a bigger role in getting ahead.
Four forms of magic
Magic abilities require handling runes, materials, ceremonies and the different traditions of the elemental powers. Many tasks link exploration and puzzles with learning new spells. The story bridges the gap between the avatar’s earlier adventures and the later conclusion of the series in Ultima IX.
Ultima VIII: Pagan was originally released for PC in 1994. Origin Systems developed the game, and Electronic Arts publishes it today. Since Nov 5, 2026, the classic has also been available on Steam; GOG offers a version maintained for modern Windows PCs. The version sold as Gold Edition includes the original base game with the voice additions.
