Active Matter

Active Matter is a tactical first-person extraction shooter by Matter Team. The game combines realistic modern weapons with a fragmented multiverse in which space, time and gravity do not reliably work. You play an Operative who returns to the same point of a time loop after every death.

At the centre is the namesake active matter: a rare substance that bends space and time. In quantum-unstable zones, you search for it, secure loot and try to extract before the zone collapses. Alongside other Operatives, anomalies, creatures altered by active matter and unusual objects await there.

An early PC version of Active Matter was already available via the Gaijin Store in 2025. The regular platform launch followed on Sep 15, 2026: since then, the game has been available on PC via Steam and the Gaijin Store, as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The full release started a new harmonisation cycle. At the same time, raid loot and the management of housing and inventory, among other things, were expanded and reworked. Matter Team and Gaijin have announced further content updates after launch.

Active Matter launched natively on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. On PC, Steam and the Gaijin Store are available.

Crossplay is implemented differently depending on the raid type: isolated raids support cross-platform play. For open raids, shared matchmaking between PC and console is only planned with the explicit consent of the players involved, to account for the different input conditions.

The core loop consists of extraction raids: alone or in small squads, you enter unstable zones, complete targets, collect active matter and other loot, and then have to get out safely. Other players can be just as dangerous as the zone's inhabitants.

The equipment is based on real military weapons and tactics. The multiverse deliberately breaks this realistic foundation: anomalies alter gravity and spatial geometry, objects can appear from other timelines, and creatures react to the active matter. Between deployments, you build up your arsenal and base; there are also direct PvP battles between syndicates.

For the Windows version, Active Matter requires at least a Core i5-6600 or Ryzen 3 1300X, 8 GB RAM and a GTX 1050 Ti, RX 470 or Intel Arc A580. Recommended are a Core i5-8700 or Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB RAM and an RTX 2060, RX 5700 XT or Arc A770. In both cases, 45 GB of storage, an SSD and a broadband connection are listed.

Steam also lists native Linux requirements. The recommended specs name Ubuntu 26.04 (64-bit) with otherwise comparable hardware.
