What is Alien: Isolation 2?

Alien: Isolation 2 is the survival horror sequel from Creative Assembly. You're not fighting an army of monsters but trying to escape a Xenomorph that hunts you through dark interiors and across a storm-battered colony planet.

Unlike its predecessor, a new female lead takes centre stage. The story begins with a survey team discovering a mysterious crashed aircraft. When a researcher examines the wreck more closely, the settlement falls into deadly danger.

Gameplay

You try to shake off the alien instead of defeating it in open combat. To do this, you observe your surroundings, find ways past danger and use objects to distract the creature. Because encounters change, the same evasion strategy is not meant to work permanently.

The focus remains on tension and improvisation. The open terrain calls for different decisions than the interiors, because cover, sound and visibility are distributed differently.

The story on the colony planet

A survey team investigates a crash on a remote colony world. A researcher focuses her attention on the mysterious wreck. What she finds there unleashes a deadly threat.

The survivor must find a way out of the settlement. Her path leads through the Weyland-Yutani facility Kurosaki Station and across the dangerous surface of the planet. The storm not only makes navigation harder but also changes the alien's hunt.

Kurosaki Station and the outside world

Alien: Isolation 2 combines narrow passages with expansive outdoor areas. In Kurosaki Station, you'll find grimy, heavily used work areas and gloomy technical facilities. The design draws on the industrial science fiction aesthetic of the late 1970s and on Japanese design elements.

Outside the station, you are exposed to wind, rain and low visibility. Creative Assembly has enlarged the environments so the alien remains a constant threat not only in corridors but also in open terrain.

How the Xenomorph hunts

The Xenomorph in Alien: Isolation 2 is meant to react more aggressively to movement and attempts to distract it. Creative Assembly is developing its behaviour for much larger areas, where it actively hunts you even outside the station.

The alien uses storms and poor visibility to approach unnoticed. At the same time, it can react to repeated tricks. You therefore need to adapt your approach instead of relying on the same hiding spot or the same object every time you're spotted.

Distractions and objects

Loose objects in the world can be used to draw the alien's attention away. The developers plan more such options than in the original Alien: Isolation, including objects you can grab on the spot.

Distractions are no substitute for a safe escape route. They create brief openings that let you break away from a dangerous situation.

Weather, lighting and sounds

Rain, wind and thunderstorms are central elements of the new environment. They make it harder to spot the Xenomorph and can also hide its approach. Inside the station, lighting and tight spaces create a different kind of danger.

The alien's sounds are also being reworked. The sound design is meant to make its movements feel more natural and less predictable.

Photo mode with lighting and camera settings

Alien: Isolation 2 gets a photo mode. Creative Assembly has explained settings such as exposure, brightness, saturation and depth of field. Additional light sources can be placed for shots in dark areas.

The team wants to complement the visuals with filters and frame elements that evoke the atmosphere of the first Alien film. This makes it possible to capture both the outside world and the station's industrial spaces.

Optional microphone detection

Alien: Isolation 2 is set to include an optional microphone feature. Sounds in the room can then feed into the game and make you easier for enemies to find. The feature builds on the Kinect support of the first game, but is no longer limited to the Xbox hardware of the time.

This feature is optional. You can also play the game without this additional sound detection.

Game series

Creative Assembly is developing Alien: Isolation 2 as the successor to the survival horror game released in 2014. The first game was mostly set on the Sevastopol space station and followed Amanda Ripley. The sequel tells a new story with a different lead character.

The new setting combines the claustrophobic interiors of its predecessor with exposed outdoor areas. SEGA is publishing the game in collaboration with 20th Century Studios.
