What is Attack on Titan 2?

Attack on Titan 2 (A.O.T. 2) is an action game by Omega Force and Koei Tecmo based on Hajime Isayama's manga and anime series. Players create their own character in the Survey Corps and experience the first two anime seasons from a new perspective. The focus is on aerial combat with 3D Maneuver Gear against huge Titans. Between missions, you deepen relationships with the source material's characters, upgrade equipment and prepare new missions.

Release

Attack on Titan 2 first came out on Mar 15, 2018 in Japan, including on PlayStation Vita. The Western versions for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch followed in March 2018. The Steam date of Apr 26, 2023 that is visible today is therefore not the game's original release date.

Final Battle followed in Europe and North America on Jul 5, 2019. The edition bundles the original game and additional content from the third anime season; owners of the base version can add the same content with a separate Upgrade Pack.

Platforms

Native versions of Attack on Titan 2 exist for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation Vita. The PS Vita version was released in Japan; the Western platform lineup does not include it. Final Battle, or rather the Upgrade Pack, was offered for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, but not for Vita.

Whether older console versions run on newer hardware must be distinguished from native versions. The official PlayStation site explicitly labels Final Battle as the PS4 version, which can run backward compatible on PS5.

Gameplay

The three-dimensional Maneuver Gear (ODM Gear) takes your character in wide arcs through streets, over rooftops and past Titans. Hits have to be prepared: individual body parts can be attacked before the vulnerable nape becomes reachable. A proper flight path is therefore more important than simply attacking nonstop.

Compared with its predecessor, A.O.T. 2 expands the aerial combat system with actions such as the Sneak Attack from a distance and the Hook Drive. Huge enemies, your own resources and the movements of other Titans mean you constantly have to reposition your attacks.

DLCs and expansions

The major expansion Final Battle adds events from the third anime season, additional characters and new combat tools. These include anti-Titan spears, equipment for fights against human enemies and a mode for reclaiming areas outside the walls. The expanded version offers more than 40 characters to choose from.

Important for choosing an edition: The Final Battle Upgrade Pack expands an existing Attack on Titan 2. The separately sold Final Battle complete edition, by contrast, already includes the base game. Smaller costume and episode packs must not be equated with this major expansion.

System requirements

For Windows, the Steam product page lists at least Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-2400, 6 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 660 with at least 1 GB video memory. DirectX 11 and around 30 GB of free storage space are also specified.

As recommended hardware, the store lists a Core i7-3770, 8 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 960 with 2 GB video memory. A broadband connection is required for online modes. These requirements apply to the PC version and not to the technical specifications of the console versions.

The details apply to PC (Windows, 64 Bit).

Blades, gas and comrades in battle

The 3D Maneuver Gear uses up gas, and its blades wear down over time. If you take on long battles without resupplying, you risk a weaker starting position. In combat, you can refill resources and replace equipment when needed.

Companions are more than spectators: in the field, you can order allies to attack or spread out. Their individual Buddy Actions help in fighting off Titans. Positioning, supply management and coordination with your own squad are therefore directly part of the combat system.

Reclaim areas with Final Battle

With the Territory Recovery Mode, Final Battle adds a second structure alongside the anime episodes. Players assemble their own squad from familiar characters and reclaim areas outside the walls. Team combinations that never appeared together in the source material are also allowed.

In the course of the territory recovery, relationships within the squad grow and further events are unlocked. The expansion also adds anti-Titan spears and 3D Maneuver Gear for use against humans, which widens your options beyond the classic blade maneuver against Titans.

Friendships and town life

Between missions, the character visits the town and talks with members of the Survey Corps. Shared missions and gifts build friendship. New conversations, events and abilities become accessible as a result.

In this area you can also upgrade blades, gas canisters and maneuver gear, as well as prepare training and missions. Daily life thus links hunting missions with ongoing character development and side stories of your own.

Co-op and competitive online play

Attack on Titan 2 supports online co-op and competitive modes. In co-op, players can fight Titans together. Other modes pit two teams against each other or award points for defeated enemies.

The developer lists Showdown, Expulsion, Predator and Annihilation, among others, as different competitive modes. Steam explicitly confirms online PvP and online co-op for the PC version. Cross-platform play between PC and consoles is therefore not confirmed.

German text, Japanese voices

The Windows version offers German user interface and subtitles according to Steam. Japanese is listed for the full voice audio, not German. Other on-screen languages include English, French, Italian and Spanish.

The German PlayStation page also lists a Japanese voice track and German on-screen text for Final Battle. Language support is therefore shown per platform and is not carried over unchecked from one edition to all others.

Game series

The story is based on Hajime Isayama's manga Shingeki no Kyojin and its anime adaptation. Koei Tecmo takes over the central characters and conflicts but tells them from the perspective of an additional playable character. According to the publisher, plot elements developed specifically for the game were added under Isayama's supervision.

While the original A.O.T. 2 mainly covers the first two seasons, Final Battle extends this structure to the events of season 3. The title is therefore neither a continuation of the entire manga story nor equivalent to the first Attack on Titan game.
