What is Fate/Samurai Remnant?

Fate/Samurai Remnant is a narrative single-player action RPG by Koei Tecmo and Omega Force, made under the supervision of TYPE-MOON. It moves the ritual typical of the Fate series, between summoners and historical hero spirits, into Edo-era Japan of the 17th century.

Players accompany the young swordsman Miyamoto Iori and the Servant Saber he summoned. Instead of a turn-based combat system, the focus is on direct sword fights, magic, the cooperation of both characters and exploring several city districts. The story revolves around seven pairs who fight over the fulfillment of a wish in the so-called Waxing Moon ritual.

The PC version was released on Sep 28, 2023. The German PlayStation Store listings also point the PS4 and PS5 versions to the original release; Nintendo gives Sep 29, 2023 for the native Switch version. All four base game versions belong to the same game and are not different story editions.

A PC demo is still listed on Steam. Discounts and time-limited offers are not part of the permanent game description.

Gameplay

Between story scenes and battles, you move through the streets of Edo, complete missions and gain new allies. An important part of the system is switching between the human fighter Iori and the far more powerful Servants: against especially resilient enemies, combined techniques are needed before ordinary sword attacks take effect.

The city districts have merchants, conversations and small interactions. Exploration isn't just backdrop: it leads to encounters with other Masters and Servants, and to chances to gain new techniques and allies.

DLCs and expansions

The Season Pass bundles three additional story episodes, which are also sold individually. Keian Command Championship leads into a tournament with several Master-Servant teams. Yagyu Sword Chronicles tells of Yagyu Munenori and a dangerous blade. Bailong and the Crimson Demon expands the story, among other things, with the Servant Zhao Yun.

The episodes offer more than just costumes: Koei Tecmo names additional Servants, skills, locations and battles. To start the DLC scenarios, certain chapters of the main game must be reached. There are also cosmetic Phantasmal Dress packs and a digital artbook with soundtrack, which are clearly separate from the story episodes.

Edo as an explorable game world

The story is set in the Keian era under the Tokugawa shogunate. Asakusa is Iori's home district, but Yoshiwara, Kanda and Akasaka are also locations. The urban areas form a network of travel routes, side quests and encounters. You can eat at stalls, talk to residents and pet animals in the surroundings.

This matters for the story: the confrontation over the Waxing Moon doesn't take place in an abstract arena but within a crowded city. New clues and allies therefore also emerge outside the actual fights.

Iori, Saber and the seven Master-Servant pairs

The protagonist, Miyamoto Iori, learned his swordsmanship from Miyamoto Musashi. When a mark on his hand draws him into the ritual, he receives the support of the mysterious Saber. Seven Masters each face off against a summoned Servant to fulfill one wish.

The relationship between Iori and Saber carries the battles. While Iori as a human relies on sword styles and magic, Saber has supernatural attacks. Other Servants also have their own goals and relationships within the ritual.

Five sword styles, magic and Affinity techniques

Iori can switch between five combat stances, each designed for different situations. The Earth stance focuses on defense, the Water stance helps against multiple enemies. Magic complements sword fighting, for example when normal attacks are not enough against a Servant.

For especially strong enemies, cooperation with Saber is essential: her Affinity techniques can weaken an opponent's guard indicator, allowing Iori to attack them. The strength of the Servants therefore does not replace choosing the right stance, but complements a system of defense, group combat and shared special attacks.

Rogue Servants and control of the Spirit Fonts

Alongside the seven central Servants, Iori encounters so-called Rogue Servants. By building relationships, they can help in battle and some can be controlled directly. Their support extends the tactical options beyond the fixed duo with Saber.

Another permanent mechanic is the Spirit Font Conflicts: connected power points in Edo are controlled to expand influence and capture enemy points. Allied Rogue Servants can take part in this. It is an independent part of the game structure and not just a short-term event.

Distinguishing Standard, Digital Deluxe and add-on packs

The Standard Edition includes the main game. The Digital Deluxe Edition adds the Season Pass and a digital artbook with soundtrack. The Season Pass itself includes the three major story DLCs and, as a bonus, the Hallowed Relic Sword Mountings gear set.

The editions are different contents of the same base game, not additional native platform releases. Individual episodes and the artbook/soundtrack are also sold separately. The publisher explicitly points out that Season Pass content should not be bought twice.

Game series

The game combines the Fate fiction overseen by TYPE-MOON with a real-time action RPG from the Koei Tecmo and Omega Force circle. The official production includes Kinoko Nasu as general supervisor, Rei Wataru on character design and Aniplex as a partner. The opening is by CloverWorks.

The fight between Masters and summoned Servants remains a structural feature of the series. The historical Edo, a new circle of participants and the focus on Iori's swordfighting styles give this spin-off its own gameplay identity. Prior knowledge of other Fate games is not listed as a requirement in the official store.
