What is Brotato: Primal Dread?

Brotato: Primal Dread is a standalone but base-game-dependent DLC expansion for the arena roguelite shooter Brotato. The potato leaves its previous locations and ends up in a dangerous prehistoric jungle. Mutated and technically enhanced dinosaurs replace part of the familiar enemy world.

The expansion adds new playable characters, weapons, items and pets. It is neither a full sequel nor a free update to the main game.

Release

in 3 daysSource: Steam

Primal Dread is announced for PC on Nov 2, 2026. Blobfish and Evil Empire confirmed the date on Oct 8 in the official Brotato developer channel, in connection with the Triple-i Showcase. The expansion has not been released at the time of the announcement. The Steam Store so far just says 2026; the more recent developer message gives the exact date.

For the other platform versions of the base game, no DLC date has yet been reliably confirmed by a current official store or developer announcement. Expansion and main game releases should be kept apart.

Platforms

The announced version is offered on PC via Steam; there it requires an existing copy of the main game Brotato. On the Steam Store, PC covers Windows, macOS and Linux. System requirements are listed separately.

Brotato itself is also available on several consoles and mobile platforms. However, this does not mean Primal Dread is already offered on every device. Future native DLC releases must be confirmed per platform.

Gameplay

A new jungle map contains 20 waves with its own enemies, elite enemies and boss fights. More playable characters, weapons, items and pets expand the number of possible builds. Additional music tracks and achievements are also part of the announced scope.

The biggest structural change is the new Evolution attribute. It can be developed in two different directions, which not only give your own character different bonuses but also change enemies and their attack patterns.

System requirements

On Steam, Primal Dread is marked as an add-on and can only be played with the base game Brotato. The store lists the minimum technical specs as a 2 GHz CPU, 4 GB RAM, a graphics solution compatible with OpenGL 3 with 128 MB of memory, and around 200 MB of free storage. The Windows 7 requirement still listed is not the same as the current minimum requirements of the Steam client.

Mecha: machines against machines

If Evolution is developed toward Mecha, it strengthens your own weapons and adds extra stats, according to the developer. At the same time, mechanized dinosaurs appear with laser shots and oil puddles. The build's advantage therefore comes with a changed threat picture in the arena.

This additional enemy variant is an announced permanent system of the DLC, not a time-limited event.

Mutation: more powerful items, more dangerous enemies

The alternative Mutation path multiplies certain item effects after the announcement by copying them. The opposite side of this build is mutated dinosaurs that spread acid across the map. This means the same card can produce different threats and synergies depending on how it develops.

How both directions affect each character build cannot be fully assessed before release.
