Death Stranding

Death Stranding is an action-adventure by Kojima Productions in which you play as Sam Porter Bridges, connecting a fractured society. A supernatural event has devastated large parts of America. Sam brings vital cargo to isolated people, connects facilities to a communication network and encounters mysterious apparitions along the way.

The adventure combines a science fiction story with delivery jobs across an open landscape. Route choice, equipment and the weight of your cargo decide success.

Death Stranding was released on November 8, 2019 for PlayStation 4. The Windows version followed on July 14, 2020 on Steam and the Epic Games Store. The PS4 version was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, and 505 Games handled PC distribution.

The later Death Stranding Director’s Cut is an expanded version with additional missions and gameplay options. The original edition should be told apart from this newer version.

The original Death Stranding was released for PS4 and Windows PC. The PC version supports mouse, keyboard and controller. Mac and Linux are not natively supported systems for this edition.

The later versions for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and compatible Apple devices are part of the Director’s Cut. For a platform switch, the specific edition is therefore important.

In Death Stranding you deliver cargo across vast distances and plan routes through mountains, rivers and ruins. Sam can take ladders and climbing anchors and spread the load across his back. Vehicles, exoskeletons and hovering cargo carriers open up further options.

Jobs call for careful weighing of short, difficult routes against safe detours. Falls, bad weather and enemies can damage the cargo.

For Death Stranding on Windows PC, 505 Games lists at least 8 GB RAM, an Intel Core i5-3470 or Ryzen 3 1200, and a GeForce GTX 1050 with 3 GB or Radeon RX 560 with 4 GB. The minimum configuration targets 720p at around 30 frames per second. Installation and play need around 80 GB of storage.

For 1080p at around 60 frames per second, an Intel Core i7-3770 or Ryzen 5 1600 and a GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB or Radeon RX 590 are recommended. The PC version requires Windows 10 and DirectX 12.

The Social Strand System lets you indirectly benefit from other players' structures. Bridges, ladders and other aids can appear in your world, even though you play the story alone. Likewise, you can build infrastructure yourself and make progress easier for other couriers.

You give likes for helpful posts and can pick up lost cargo from other players. There is no direct co-op campaign. Between PS4 and PC, the original version offers no crossplay.

In Death Stranding, dangerous terrain, time rain and supernatural beings make deliveries harder. The ghostly BTs can draw Sam into threatening encounters. Human enemies, including the raiders known as MULEs, also block routes and steal cargo.

Sneaking, adapted routes and special equipment help you avoid or survive such situations. The choice of transport also influences how safely Sam reaches his destination.

The PC version of Death Stranding supports ultrawide monitors, HDR, high frame rates and a photo mode. There is also the higher difficulty level “Very Hard” and additional content from the Half-Life series.

Frame rate during play is not capped at 60, but cutscenes remain limited to a maximum of 60 frames per second. The PC version does not provide official modding tools.

The Director’s Cut adds further jobs, equipment and activities to the original Death Stranding. These include a racetrack, a shooting range and additional missions. Sam's story remains the starting point.

The original came out in 2019 for PS4 and in 2020 for PC. The Director’s Cut launched in 2021 on PS5 and was later released for other platforms. If you are looking for certain bonus content, you should therefore check the name of the edition.

Death Stranding offers German subtitles on Windows PC and supports both keyboard and mouse as well as controllers. The text language can be chosen from numerous available subtitle languages. An internet connection is needed for the indirect online features, not for the basic control of Sam.

The PC version also supports ultrawide monitors and NVIDIA DLSS 2.0. Ray tracing is not among the features of this original release.

Death Stranding Isolations arrives in 2027 on Disney+ and other Disney services. The hand-drawn anime series tells a new story in the universe of the games. The plot begins after Sam reconnects North America through the chiral network and follows people who go their own way in the newly connected world.

The story centers on a girl, among others, who has withdrawn from the outside world after the catastrophic events. Takayuki Sano directs, while Tow Ubukata is responsible for the script and series concept. E&H production animates the series. Hideo Kojima is involved as executive producer.
