What is Dune: Awakening?

Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival RPG by Funcom set on Arrakis. Rather than a direct retelling of the novels or films, the game uses an alternative Dune timeline in which Paul Atreides was never born. Players explore the desert, collect water and spice, build bases and vehicles, and work their way up between Atreides and Harkonnen.

The world combines survival, crafting, exploration and combat with a cinematically told campaign. Since Update 1.5, the entire story can also be played in the full single-player mode.

Gameplay

Survival on Arrakis is at the heart of the game. Water, heat, sandstorms and sandworms shape the journey through Hagga Basin and the Deep Desert. Players gather resources, build bases, process spice, craft weapons and tools, and construct vehicles such as sandbikes and ornithopters.

Update 1.5 adds a full single-player mode with three difficulty presets and detailed rules. Adjustable settings include resource yield, building costs, respawn times, damage, enemy health, durability, experience, dehydration, heat, sandstorms and sandworms. In solo mode, the Deep Desert persists permanently, buildings are not removed by map resets, and the Landsraad simulates the participation of other factions.

The update also reworks melee combat, NPC balance, dungeon rewards, tutorial, user interface, gamepad support and performance on all platforms.

DLCs and expansions

Blood and Ice releases on Dec 1, 2026 as a free expansion for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The new Polar Sink region moves survival from the scorching desert to the icy polar zone of Arrakis. The route leads first through the tundra and then to a heavily guarded ice cap. New equipment, vehicle modules, improvements and specializations are part of the expansion.

There are also paid extra content packs such as Wildlife of Arrakis, Lost Harvest, Raiders of the Broken Lands, The Water Wars and Filmic Archive. The additional outfits, equipment designs and building items should be distinguished from the free world expansions.

Blood and Ice: Survival in the Polar Region

Blood and Ice expands Arrakis with Polar Sink on Dec 1, 2026. The new map includes tundra and an ice cap. In the tundra, influential water traders defend their facilities. Further north, players must secure access to the ice. Instead of desert heat, cold, equipment and choosing safe routes determine survival.

Funcom announces around 35 hours of additional progression options, new resources, vehicle modules, augments and specialisations. Collected ice can be used to cool production facilities at the base and can speed up crafting processes. The region is meant to remain accessible after the new resource-gathering tasks are completed.

Offline play, character transfer and crossplay

An offline mode for single players is due in November 2026. This lets you play the solo campaign without an internet connection. For January 2027, Funcom announces the transfer of characters from multiplayer worlds into single-player mode, and from there onto selected private or self-hosted PC servers, provided these transfers are permitted.

Full crossplay between PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is announced for January 2027. This feature is not among the play options already available. Transfers and playing together across platforms therefore get separate time windows.

Game series

Dune: Awakening belongs to the Dune franchise but tells its own alternative story. The key starting point is that Paul Atreides was never born in this timeline. This allows Funcom to rearrange familiar places, houses and characters, while also drawing on elements from Frank Herbert's novel world and the modern film adaptations.

Atreides and Harkonnen form the central power blocs. Players meet well-known characters such as Duke Leto and Feyd-Rautha, while the campaign also raises new questions about the vanished Fremen and the player character's own past.
