Echoes of Aincrad

Echoes of Aincrad is a single-player action RPG set in the Sword Art Online universe. You create your own character, enter the virtual Aincrad Castle and, together with other trapped players, try to escape the deadly game world.

The story begins with a beta phase and then leads into the actual death game. Your character experiences a story of their own within the familiar world. The game was developed by Game Studio Inc. and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment.

Released on Jul 10, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam in Germany. In some regions, the Steam version unlocked as early as Jul 9.

The three platform versions launched together internationally. A native version for Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 has not been announced.

Echoes of Aincrad is available for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PC version is sold through Steam. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are not native releases.

The platforms share the same core idea: exploration, quests and real-time combat with a computer-controlled companion. There is no shared online multiplayer mode.

You accept quests, explore open areas and dungeons, and fight monsters and bosses. Between trips, you improve equipment and abilities to handle tougher enemies.

Progress depends on the interplay of weapon choice, character stats, dodge manoeuvres and the support of your companion. New quests lead you through the early floors of Aincrad.

Genesis Maidens is expected to release in winter 2026 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series. The expansion introduces a new story, more side quests and additional areas on the first two floors of Aincrad.

Misumi Tozawa, known as Mito, joins as a companion. She comes from the Sword Art Online Progressive films. She wields a curved sword with her own skills. You can also upgrade armour with passive effects.

For the PC version, Windows 11, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 12 and about 30 GB of storage space on an SSD are listed. Minimum graphics include, among others, a GeForce RTX 2060 with 6 GB or a Radeon RX 5700 with 8 GB.

For the recommended specs, Steam lists among others a GeForce RTX 2070 or Radeon RX 6700 XT, plus a faster processor.

At the start, you create your own character. Templates and customisable features allow an individual look. Unlike in many earlier Sword Art Online games, there is no fixed series character at the centre as the main character.

Experience points and attribute increases later determine your character's strengths. Equipment and abilities can be tailored to different fighting styles.

Combat takes place in real time. You combine normal attacks with dodge rolls, parries and special sword skills. Stamina and good timing decide whether you avoid a hit or get an opening to attack yourself.

Enemies range from single monsters to bosses. For difficult encounters, it pays to watch attack patterns and prepare the right abilities.

The base game offers six weapon types: sword and shield, two-handed axe, dagger, rapier, two-handed sword and mace. They differ in reach, speed, defence and special attacks.

In towns, you can craft weapons from blueprints you find and upgrade them with materials at the blacksmith. Additional effects change how they can be used.

Before a quest, you choose a computer-controlled partner. Depending on the character, different support abilities are available, including healing, buffs or their own attacks.

Using the Switch System, you change how you work together in combat: your partner can attack the same enemies, keep other enemies busy or chain attacks with you. As your bond grows, you unlock more partner abilities.

The story takes you through the first two floors of Aincrad. Towns serve as starting points for trips into open landscapes and dungeons. There you'll find side quests, treasure chests, equipment and enemies.

The individual quests are linked to the attempt to overcome the floors. Alongside the path to the boss enemies, a separate story develops around your character.

In Death Game mode the save is deleted when your character dies. The optional rule enforces the danger of the Sword Art Online world particularly consistently.

In the base game this mode becomes regularly available after completing the story. The Deluxe and Ultimate Editions include early unlocking.

Echoes of Aincrad is a single-player game. The companions you fight with are controlled by the game. Shared online matches or local co-op are not part of the game.

The partner system adds tactical decisions to single-player battles, but does not replace a second human player character.

The Standard Edition includes the main game. The Deluxe Edition adds, among other things, the expansion pass, a starter pack with consumables and the early-unlocked Death Game mode.

The Ultimate Edition also includes the bonus app Unanswered//butterfly with an anime, a digital artbook, the soundtrack and an armor pack. These editions change the equipment of the main game, not the number of native platform versions.
