What is Eternal Anima?

Eternal Anima is a standalone, narrative role-playing game by Marvelous. It combines turn-based battles and a multi-member travel party with a story about inherited knowledge and the consequences of interfering with the past. The hero Wade has two special abilities: he reads memories from objects and can recognize a possible course of the enemy's next actions in combat.

The story begins in a world whose habitable areas have been swallowed by the sea. Wade leaves the floating kingdom of Urvis Ael and travels into the past and present of four lost continents. The game draws on classic JRPG structures, but relies on its own interconnected systems for character building and turn planning.

Release

in 4 months

Marvelous has announced Eternal Anima for March 4, 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The publisher names a worldwide launch. The regional Steam listing may differ; the explicitly stated global date is what counts for the developer announcement documented here.

The game was first teased under the working title PROJECT LIFE is RPG. The final title and the specific release date were presented on September 9, 2026 in connection with a Nintendo Direct. It is a new game, not a remaster or an expansion of an existing series.

Platforms

At the announced launch, Windows PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 are planned. Marvelous explicitly names these four versions as separate platform releases. A PS4, Xbox One or Switch 1 version was not announced in the official release information reviewed; compatibility with older console games is no proof of a native version.

Regular physical editions have been announced for consoles. On PS5 and Switch 2, a collector's edition with soundtrack, illustrations and artbook is also planned. These variants are packaging or equipment versions of the same game; current pre-order prices and retailer offers do not form part of the permanent description.

Gameplay

Outside of battles, the group accompanies Wade as he explores various regions and time periods. Memories and artifacts are more than collectibles: they unlock abilities and classes that can change the combat style. The story and the group's development are thus thematically linked.

Battles are turn-based. Instead of only reacting to enemy attacks, players are meant to see their upcoming actions through so-called foresight. They then choose commands that block damage, slow down enemies or prevent their planned turn. How well this works in the finished game, depending on the enemy and situation, remains a developer description and is not a hands-on test.

System requirements

Steam lists a 64-bit processor and a 64-bit operating system as the basic requirement for Eternal Anima. Specific minimum and recommended specifications for CPU, graphics card, RAM or free storage space have not yet been fully published in the current official store overview. The details there are marked as TBD.

Therefore, neither a confirmed target frame rate nor the required hardware can be derived from the material available so far. Once Marvelous publishes binding PC requirements, the details can be added based on the official store data.

Urvis Ael and the four lost continents

The floating kingdom of Urvis Ael lies in a world without ordinary landmasses. Its inhabitants live under the authority of a ruler who forbids progress. Anyone who, like Wade, questions the existing order is considered a heretic. His escape across the so-called Forbidden Sea sets the journey in motion.

Wade and his companions visit four lost continents across different time periods. The search for the causes of these civilizations' downfall links their personal stories to world events. Marvelous names the relationship between past and present as a central narrative principle, but has not yet fully revealed the exact sequence of events or the scope of the playable areas.

Psychometry: Classes and abilities from memories

Wade's psychometry allows him to decode memories preserved in objects and artifacts. This way, not only can clues about past events be found, but also the classes and abilities of past people can be inherited. This is the so far concrete basis of character building.

The inherited classes and abilities are meant to be combinable. This allows different combat styles to emerge from the same found items, rather than a preset hero being limited to a fixed role. It is still open how many classes there will be and what limits apply to combinations; the existing developer description gives no reliable figures on this.

Future Sight: See enemy actions before your turn

With Future Sight, Wade can predict during turn-based battles when an enemy will act and what consequences a particular move is likely to have. The system is meant to expand the usual trade-off between attack, defense and resource use: players know parts of the upcoming sequence and try to deliberately change it.

If, for example, a dangerous attack becomes visible, a defensive command can be prepared, or your own turn can be chosen so that the enemy action is delayed or prevented. Marvelous explicitly describes these options; a statement on hit chance, the reliability of each prediction or final game balance would currently be speculation.

Past, descendants and inherited knowledge

Eternal Anima focuses not only on a journey through varied landscapes, but also on the passing on of knowledge between generations. According to Marvelous' description, Wade meets people from different eras. The group will experience how earlier decisions affect the living conditions of later generations, and how abilities are passed down from ancestors to their descendants.

This theme is also anchored in gameplay: psychometry makes the legacy of older characters usable for the current travel party. However, whether certain decisions trigger alternate endings or lasting changes to the game world is not confirmed by the details published so far, so it is not claimed as an existing feature.

Game mode, language and supported features

The official Steam page lists Eternal Anima as a single-player role-playing game. Steam achievements, cloud saves and controller support on PC are also confirmed. Online co-op or competitive multiplayer is currently not listed as a product feature.

German on-screen text and subtitles are announced. Full voice acting is listed on Steam for English and Japanese, not German. The store overview lists further text languages such as French, Spanish, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese. Further statements about specific accessibility options are not reliable without confirmation from the developer.

Standard edition and physical collector's editions

Marvelous distinguishes the regular game from an additionally announced Limited Edition. The latter is said to include, on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2, a two-disc soundtrack CD, nine illustration cards with stand and an artbook. The announced standard edition is also available for Xbox Series.

This equipment applies to collector's products and says nothing about separate playable story content. No exclusive collector's edition mechanic is confirmed for the game systems described here. Prices, availability at individual retailers and pre-order promotions change and do not belong in the permanent game profile.

Game series

Eternal Anima is being developed by Marvelous. The title was revealed in 2023 under the working title PROJECT LIFE is RPG and received its official name in September 2026. The developers describe the game as a new JRPG inspired by classic examples from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The core team includes director Katsuhisa Higuchi, story concept writer Keisuke Makino and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima.
