Expeditions: A MudRunner Game is an off-road simulation by Saber Interactive in which research expeditions through deserts, forests and mountains are prepared and driven. What is Expeditions: A MudRunner Game?

Expeditions: A MudRunner Game is an off-road simulation about scientific exploration. Instead of mainly driving transport jobs on fixed routes, players find a passable way to research sites themselves, recover equipment and explore hard-to-reach landscapes. The vehicles react to terrain, slope and obstacles, so a short route can be riskier than a detour.

The game was developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment. It can be played alone or in the online co-op added later for up to four players. Whoever prepares a mission decides on vehicle, equipment and experts, not just the destination on the map.

Release

The regular sales launch was on Mar 5, 2024 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Certain pre-order editions already gave early access in late February or early March 2024; this is not a separate platform release.

The game was later expanded permanently. In July 2024, the free online co-op first appeared on Steam, and on Sept 5, 2024 it followed on consoles together with Season 1. The Year 1 Pass ended with Season 4: Amber Dusk on Nov 20, 2025. Focus announced that it would not release any further official content packs afterwards.

Platforms

There are standalone versions for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. The Windows version is offered on Steam and in the Epic Games Store. The two PlayStation generations and the two Xbox generations should be treated as separate native platform versions, not merely as backward-compatible launches.

On PlayStation, the product page offers a licence to download the digital PS4 and PS5 version. On Xbox, the store details list Xbox One and Xbox Series as supported devices. A standalone Switch 2 version has not been confirmed by the available official sources.

Gameplay

An expedition begins with a mission and only ends once your vehicle and equipment have made it through the terrain. Whether rocky slopes, deep mud or a riverbed, the driving physics make speed alone a poor guide. The mission may require reaching hidden places, collecting data or discovering equipment.

Routes are explored with technical tools before you get stuck. While driving, you must assess obstacles, recover vehicles when needed and use carried resources wisely. The appeal lies more in preparing for and overcoming terrain than in a race against other vehicles.

DLCs and expansions

Four major expansions add to the base game. Cave Odyssey brings underground expeditions, White Dawn snowy areas and new trucks, Icy Shores more missions in the Transylvanian Alps. Amber Dusk finally leads to the Tatra Mountains with the maps Cat’s Spine Ridge and Owl Lake Ridge.

Alongside paid season content, free gameplay systems and equipment were released for everyone. With the launch of Amber Dusk on November 20, 2025, planning for new official content expansions ended.

Drone, sonar, winch and recovery aids

The tools serve different purposes: a scouting drone checks the route from the air, a metal detector helps find hidden equipment, and the sonar measures water depths. The winch pulls a vehicle out of difficult spots or secures the drive on steep slopes. Portable anchors add attachment points, and a jackscrew rights overturned vehicles.

These tools do not replace choosing the right vehicle. Different equipment suits narrow paths and heavy obstacles. Only the combination of terrain assessment, technology and spare capacity makes a longer expedition reliably plannable.

Vehicles, driving physics and garage

The garage offers lighter scouts, larger off-road vehicles and heavy trucks. Small vehicles can explore very narrow routes, while larger machines can carry more equipment. The right choice depends on track width, ground, range and mission goal.

Vehicles can be prepared for their tasks with accessories and modifications. Extra storage, spare parts or additional measuring devices change what you can carry on the road. The main focus remains off-road driving with traction, slopes and physical obstacles, not a classic racing game with set tracks.

Research missions and progress

The mission system links journeys to scientific goals: reaching remote places, collecting information and investigating find sites. Researchers need access to deserts, mountains and caves, which often have no direct drivable road. Clients and terrain set the framework, but players must work out the safe route themselves.

Completed expeditions bring funds for further projects. These can be used to upgrade equipment, accessories and the outpost, among other things. Progress affects future missions: new specialist equipment can make a route that was too risky before practical.

Base and specialists

Between missions, the starting point for new expeditions is expanded. Research facilities and other base modules unlock support options or make supplies easier. Choosing a crew is also part of the planning: specialists give expeditions different advantages.

If you expect tough terrain, you can match your vehicle and support to it. Other missions reward thorough exploration or finding hidden depots. The base system is mainly for long-term preparation, while the real challenge happens out on the map.

Regions and landscapes

The starting regions lead through Arizona and the Carpathians. Deserts, mountains, caves and riverbeds place different demands on vehicles, route planning and recovery tools.

The expansions added new maps: Cave Odyssey brought caves, White Dawn snowy Carpathians, Icy Shores the Transylvanian Alps, and Amber Dusk two autumn Tatra maps with flooded valleys and ruins.

Online co-op for up to four players

Expeditions has supported online multiplayer since 2024. Up to four players explore regions, coordinate their vehicles and tools, and can help each other through difficult terrain. The free multiplayer update was released on Steam on July 17, 2024, and on consoles on September 5, 2024.

Co-op is a permanent game mode, not a time-limited event. On PlayStation, online play may require PlayStation Plus; local split-screen is not listed.

Standard, Year 1 and Supreme Edition

The Standard Edition includes the base game. The Year 1 Edition adds the Season Pass and, depending on the store, other named bonuses. The Supreme Edition also includes the Pioneer Pack, among other things, with extra vehicle variants.

These editions are different packages of the same game, not separate sequels. If you want to play additional maps and season vehicles later, check whether the package you choose includes the Year 1 Pass.

Mods and the end of the official content plan

On November 20, 2025, Focus Entertainment released Season 4: Amber Dusk as the last planned official content expansion. After this conclusion, further work is set to focus mainly on stability issues and critical bugs.

Modding remains separate: the official announcements name community content via mod.io as a continuing option. It is therefore incorrect to equate the end of new official seasons with shutting down the game or the content already released.

Game series

Like MudRunner and SnowRunner, Expeditions comes from Saber Interactive and builds on off-road challenges based on driving physics. However, the focus shifts from transporting heavy loads to exploration and scientific fieldwork.

With scouting drones, sonar and metal detectors, preparing a route becomes a central part of the gameplay. The expeditions are understandable without prior knowledge of the other games; they do not require completing a predecessor's story.
