What is FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves?

FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves is a versus fighting game from SNK, released in 2025. In the fictional city of South Town, characters such as Rock Howard and Terry Bogard face old rivals and new challengers. The series continues after Garou: Mark of the Wolves, rather than re-releasing its campaign unchanged.

The focus is on duels between different characters, an offensively oriented REV system, and single-player and online offerings. The fighting techniques and the REV resource can be controlled through both classic and simplified inputs.

Gameplay

The REV system adds its own resource mechanics to attacks and defense: players can use REV Arts, REV Accel, REV Blows and REV Guard, for example. If you use up your REV reserve too much, you risk overheating and having to temporarily forgo certain options.

The game combines offensive positioning and pressure with the decision of when additional REV techniques are worth it. The separate input modes are meant to give both experienced fighting game players and newcomers access to the same fights.

Rock Howard and the story of South Town

The plot picks up from Garou: Mark of the Wolves. After his encounter with the former underworld boss Geese Howard, Terry Bogard took in his son Rock Howard. Years later, Rock searches for his long-missing mother and once again gets caught up in conflicts over his family's past.

South Town is the setting for these conflicts. The individual character stories can be experienced in Arcade mode; not every guest fighter automatically belongs to the core of the main story.

Crossplay, rollback and online modes

Online, you can play ranked matches, casual matches and private room matches. SNK uses rollback netcode and cross-platform duels between supported versions. Two players are needed for local duels.

Replays can be watched again. In addition, the Clone mode offers opponents whose behavior is simulated from previously recorded player behavior. This does not replace a conversation or playing with a real person, but it adds to training options.

Arcade, training and EOST

Versus offers classic or customizable duels. The Arcade mode tells character stories as a continuation of Garou; training includes free practice, missions and tutorials. These structures exist alongside the competitive online play.

Episodes of South Town (EOST) is a separate single-player mode with a city map, experience points, abilities and various enemy rules. According to SNK, EOST initially requires an internet connection to update the game; this access requirement is separate from the question of which parts can be played offline later.

Customization, music and replay features

SNK offers additional customization of costume colors, patterns and accessories. Some design options are unlocked in EOST. Replays help you analyze your own fights and public matches.

The built-in music section includes tracks from Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting. For selected menus and game modes, you can use your own music playlists.

Tekken, Street Fighter and other crossovers

The character selection deliberately goes beyond the boundaries of the SNK universe. With Ken and Chun-Li, the first DLC season includes well-known Street Fighter guest characters. The third season adds characters from Tokyo Revengers and, with Reina, a fighter from Tekken 8.

The collaboration with Tekken is not a first: Geese Howard was already a guest fighter in Tekken 7. Reina continues the exchange in the opposite direction. According to SNK, she is meant to combine her fast Tekken attacks with the REV fighting system.

Game series

SNK launched the fighting game series Fatal Fury in 1991. Garou: Mark of the Wolves continued the story in 1999; City of the Wolves, a new series entry, follows on from it in 2025.

SNK develops and publishes the game. The recurring characters, South Town, the relationship between Rock Howard and Terry Bogard and the story around Geese Howard form a long-lasting part of the series' identity. Licensed guest characters expand the roster without being assigned to their original series.
