What is TEKKEN 8?

TEKKEN 8 is a three-dimensional fighting game by Bandai Namco Studios, available since Jan 26, 2024. It centers on duels between individual characters, whose different fighting styles, movement options, throws and combo attacks are learned and used against each other.

The story continues the conflict of the Mishima family: Jin Kazama tries to stop Kazuya Mishima's pursuit of power. Besides the story mode, there are various single-player and competitive options. The title uses Unreal Engine 5.

Native releases exist for Windows PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Bandai Namco names the same platforms for the base game; the publisher has not announced a standalone version for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

PC, PS5 and Xbox Series support online fights across platforms. The three base game versions are shown separately from character DLC, season passes and edition bundles.

Gameplay

The most important change is the Heat system. When a fighter activates Heat, offensive options are expanded and certain attacks are improved. Together with the Rage system, which enables especially powerful actions at low health, this puts more pressure on the opponent's defense.

The series' core pillars remain three-dimensional sidesteps, blocking, precise spacing, throws and combos. The selectable Special Style makes actions easier to access, but does not replace understanding of positioning and each character's individual strengths. Anyone who only knows the spectacular animations misses the tactical layer of the duels.

DLCs and expansions

TEKKEN 8 is being expanded with paid extra fighters. The Season 3 Pass, announced in February 2026, includes four characters and one more arena as well as earlier access to the pass content. Kunimitsu and Bob have already been added in 2026; the next fighter, Roger Jr., is announced for November. According to the publisher, Yujiro Hanma from Baki adds to the further season plans.

Bandai Namco showed Roger Jr. in detail in-game for the first time on Oct 11, 2026. The character fights as a kangaroo duo of mother and joey, uses several stances and aims to force opponents into close-range decisions despite a short reach. The developers explain, among other things, the jump stance Astronauts, Rocket Stance and Heat-specific switches in Bobbin Dance. Extra fighters do not replace a native base game version.

Confirmed European dates: Roger Jr. releases on Nov 12, 2026 for Season 3 Pass owners and on Nov 17 for general access. Yujiro Hanma is still announced for early 2027; an exact release date is not yet set. Bandai Namco plans to show his next gameplay trailer on Jan 17, 2027.

Campaign, Arcade Quest and Ghosts

The story mode The Dark Awakens continues the Mishima saga. Character episodes also tell smaller stories. Arcade Quest offers a framework with a custom avatar for learning rules and opponents; the virtual arcade is linked to your progress.

In Super Ghost Battle, you can challenge ghosts that use players' fight data and behavior patterns. The practice and replay functions help you analyze individual situations and systematically train techniques.

Local duels, online ranked matches and Fight Lounge

Multiplayer options include local versus fights, online ranked matches and direct player matchmaking. Crossplay connects the native PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions. The TEKKEN Ball mode turns the fights into a beach ball game.

The TEKKEN Fight Lounge is a virtual meeting zone where players use avatars, reach various offers and arrange fights. A crossplay match still takes place between two active fighters; the lobby only expands the social environment.

Controls help and learning

With the Special Style, which can be switched on at any time, key attacks can be performed with simplified inputs. This helps when getting into combat, without automatically taking over character choice, movement distance and defence.

The training modes, replay analysis and fighting ghosts offer different ways to practise. The developer explicitly describes the accessible entry as a supplement to the more complex classic control scheme.

Game series

Bandai Namco Studios develops TEKKEN 8, while Bandai Namco Entertainment acts as publisher. The eighth main installment continues the long-running conflict between Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima and brings well-known fighters together with newcomers.

The fights are understandable on their own, but story chapters and character episodes pick up the series' backstory. The season content supervised by Bandai Namco expands the existing roster with new and returning characters.
