What is Gothic Classic?
Gothic Classic is the modern port of the original Gothic by Piranha Bytes. The role-playing game takes place in a penal colony enclosed by a magical barrier in the kingdom of Myrtana. The nameless hero is thrown into this colony and must prove himself among the Old Camp, the New Camp and the Swamp Camp.
THQ Nordic explicitly describes Gothic Classic as a port of the original game, not a remaster or remake. The basis remains the original game code, adapted to modern platforms and input methods.

Release
The first modern console version came out for Nintendo Switch on Sep 28, 2023. Versions for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S followed on Jul 28, 2026.
Since September 2026, Gothic Classic is also available as a premium game for iPhone and iPad. This means the original Gothic is available natively on iOS and iPadOS for the first time.

Gameplay
Gothic is set in a compact open world where characters follow daily routines and react to the hero's reputation. Access to equipment, teachers and quests often depends on his standing in the colony. The player can join one of the three major camps and develops attributes and combat skills through teachers.
Combat takes place in real time. Melee and ranged combat, magic, exploration and conversations are at the core. The ports are meant to preserve this original game design and mainly adapt controls and technical compatibility for modern devices.

iPhone and iPad: touch, controller and cloud saves
The mobile version is not a free-to-play spin-off but a premium release. On iPhone and iPad, Gothic Classic offers adapted touch controls and also supports compatible game controllers.
Apple also lists Cloud Saves and Game Center as features. The app is around 3.9 GB and supports several languages besides German.

The original Gothic came out in 2001 and started the role-playing series from Piranha Bytes. Gothic Classic preserves this first game as a standalone port, while later parts and the separate Gothic remake remain separate products.
