Kena: Bridge of Spirits

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a story-driven action adventure from Ember Lab. As a young spirit guide, Kena searches for a sacred mountain shrine and comes across an abandoned village whose past is tied to restless spirits. She explores overgrown ruins, solves environmental puzzles and fights beings corrupted by a dark force.

The small forest spirits called Rot play an important role. They accompany Kena, help with exploration and support her in combat.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits was released on Sep 21, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The PC version launched first on the Epic Games Store and came to Steam in 2022. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S followed on Aug 15, 2024. The game was released for Nintendo Switch 2 on Mar 26, 2026.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits has been released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 version already includes the Anniversary Update content, including New Game+ and the additional challenges.

The Switch 2 version is a separate release. There is no original Nintendo Switch version.

Kena moves through a connected game world with forest paths, ruins and hidden areas. Her staff serves as a melee weapon and can become a bow for ranged attacks. In combat she dodges enemy attacks, uses shields and deploys the special abilities of her Rot.

Outside of combat, new paths open when Kena removes obstacles with her companions, activates switches or solves environmental puzzles.

The Anniversary Update is part of the game and not a separately required story DLC. The Digital Deluxe Edition also offers additional cosmetic content and music. The Deluxe Pack, sold separately, is not equivalent to a new story chapter.

For PC, Steam lists at least an AMD FX-6100 or Intel Core i3-3220, 12 GB RAM, a Radeon R7 360 or GeForce GTX 650 Ti with 2 GB graphics memory, and 25 GB of free storage. 16 GB RAM and a Radeon RX Vega 56 or GeForce GTX 1070 are recommended.

Rot are small spirits that Kena finds in the forest and gradually gathers into a group. They help drive away the corruption and move objects in the environment. In combat they enable special actions once Kena has built up enough energy.

Small hats can also be collected for the companions. These change their appearance, not their role in the story.

Kena combines light and heavy staff attacks with dodges, blocking, ranged attacks and Rot abilities. Additional upgrades expand her options. Some enemies require precise timing, while others respond to targeted use of the bow or companions.

Combat is a central part of the adventure. It sits alongside exploration, not just at the end of individual game sections.

Many paths stay blocked until Kena combines her magical abilities with the Rot. The areas hide collectibles, Rot companions and messages from deceased villagers. These so-called Spirit Mails open further areas and tell more about the abandoned village.

Kena travels as a spirit guide to a sacred shrine. Along the way she tries to understand the stories of trapped souls and help them leave the world of the living. The abandoned settlement and its inhabitants are at the center of this personal story.

The adventure combines quiet encounters with dangerous fights against corrupted spirits.

The free Anniversary Update adds New Game+, trials for spirit guides, equippable charmstones, new clothing and additional quality-of-life features. In New Game+ the story starts again, while certain unlocked abilities and companions are kept. The enemy encounters are rearranged for it.

The trials include obstacle courses, enemy waves and repeatable boss fights. Completing them unlocks additional outfits.

The PC version offers German text and subtitles. On Steam, English voice audio and several other text languages are listed, including French, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. The exact language selection may vary by platform.
