What is Mafia III?

Mafia III is Hangar 13's open-world action game about Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran in the fictional New Bordeaux of 1968. When his adoptive family is betrayed and killed by the Italian mafia, Lincoln attacks their businesses and power structures.

Shootouts, sneaking, car chases and freely chosen approaches combine with decisions about who controls the districts you take. The later Definitive Edition also includes all major story expansions.

Release

The original Mafia III was released on Oct 7, 2016 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. On May 19, 2020, the Definitive Edition with the story DLCs was introduced as a new retail release, not as a standalone sequel.

Since Oct 8, 2026, native versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have also been released. They offer 60 fps gameplay and technical improvements. This launch must be clearly distinguished from the older console version, which was already playable earlier via backward compatibility.

Platforms

Mafia III is available natively for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The new console versions arrive in October 2026. On PC, Windows and an older Mac port linked to Aspyr are listed.

An installed PS4 or Xbox One version does not yet make it a PS5 or Series product simply because it runs on new hardware. The editions released in 2026 are separate native releases and must be checked individually for commercial platform classification.

Gameplay

Lincoln takes out enemies with firearms, melee combat or silent attacks. Cars connect the branching city and provide fast escape routes. Each district has protection rackets, networks and rival leaders, which can be weakened in different ways.

The game combines missions with taking over criminal businesses. Information about enemy structures and decisions about how to proceed shape how Lincoln builds his own power base.

DLCs and expansions

The Definitive Edition bundles the base game with Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned and Sign of the Times. It also includes bonus packs such as Family Kick-Back and Judge, Jury & Executioner.

The expansions add separate story sections, weapons, vehicles and additional missions. They are not new platform versions. For PS5 and Xbox Series, the released Definitive Edition already includes these packs.

Lincoln Clay in New Bordeaux, 1968

New Bordeaux is a fictional Southern city that is clearly modelled on the New Orleans of the time. Lincoln returns from the Vietnam War and clashes with the Marcano family. Revenge and the search for new allies drive the campaign.

The game also depicts racism and historical social tensions. In a separate note, Hangar 13 explains why discriminatory language and behaviour are part of the portrayal. The fictional story is not a documentary retelling of the city's history.

Rackets, districts and sub-bosses

Over the course of the game, Lincoln can recruit allies including Cassandra, Vito Scaletta and Thomas Burke. When areas are taken over, a decision must be made about who gains control. The distribution affects loyalty and the support of those involved.

As a result, decisions about your own organisation have consequences beyond a single fight. The territory system is a permanent part of the single-player campaign.

Who receives the free console upgrade

2K gives qualifying owners of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Trilogy or Mafia: The Omertà Collection access to the new digital console versions without buying the game again. For the PS4 disc, the publisher requires a PS5 model with a disc drive and the disc to remain permanently inserted.

Digital Xbox One licences purchased before Oct 8, 2026 can be upgraded to the Series version via the Xbox library or store. Separate licence terms apply to physical Xbox purchases. According to the 2K FAQ, a PS Plus monthly game licence explicitly does not count as a qualifying purchase.

Old save files are left behind

Getting the new version for free does not mean carrying over a game in progress. According to 2K, save games and trophies or achievements cannot be transferred from the old PS4/Xbox One editions to the new native PS5/Series versions.

If you are in the middle of Lincoln's story, you should consider this before switching. Older versions can still be used separately via backward compatibility. The new console alone is not the reason for the break; it is the change of game product.

60 FPS, loading times and bug fixes

The new console versions support 60 frames per second during gameplay. Many real-time cutscenes also benefit, while pre-rendered videos partly still run at 30 FPS. 2K mentions shorter loading times and fixes for missions, achievements, lighting and the display of vegetation.

These details describe the scope of the new software. They are not an independently measured performance test, nor a guarantee that the frame rate will stay constant in every situation.

Game series

Hangar 13 developed Mafia III, and 2K is the publisher. The Mac version also involved Aspyr. The title is part of the Mafia series and carries on with Vito Scaletta, a character from the previous instalment.

Mafia: Trilogy includes the three Definitive Editions of the original, Mafia II and Mafia III. The 2026 versions expand Mafia III's availability to newer consoles and are not a separate fourth main game.
