What is Metaphor: ReFantazio?
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a standalone fantasy role-playing game by Atlus and Studio Zero. After the king's death, the succession to the throne of the Kingdom of Euchronia is not negotiated among nobles alone: a magical vote requires candidates to win support in a land shaped by prejudice and rivalry. The protagonist sets out at the same time with the goal of rescuing a cursed prince.
The game links this political story to the development of a travelling party. New places open up further quests and companions, while daily routine, equipment and class choice shape progress. It is neither part of the Persona series nor a mere fantasy re-imagining of those games.

Release
Metaphor: ReFantazio launched internationally in Oct 2024 for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A standalone version for the Nintendo Switch 2 is announced for Nov 12, 2026. The Nintendo Store explicitly lists it as a Switch 2 title. A version for the original Nintendo Switch is therefore not confirmed.
The full Switch 2 edition is listed on the Nintendo Store at around 62 GB. In markets with physical packaging, a game-key card is also offered: the card alone does not contain all game data, and the console downloads the game. This is a distribution form of the Switch 2 version and not an additional game.

Platforms
Native versions are available for PC (Windows), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo Switch 2 is added on Nov 12, 2026. The PS4 and PS5 editions and the Xbox Series version should be considered separately; a native Xbox One or Switch 1 version is not listed in the official product details.
The adventure is designed for one player. Atlus offers Japanese and English voice acting as well as German on-screen text. The manufacturer's details list different download sizes and technical requirements depending on the platform. Storage space and supported features should therefore be checked in the respective store.

Gameplay
Along the way, the group explores cities, forests and dangerous dungeons. Weaker enemies can sometimes already be defeated by direct attacks during exploration. Against stronger foes, the game switches to a turn-based command system: attacks, spells and support actions must match the formation and the enemy's weaknesses.
The journey is therefore more than a series of isolated battles. Preparation, use of equipment, handling limited resources and choosing suitable skills determine whether a dungeon succeeds in one attempt or needs further preparation. Metaphor deliberately combines active play outside battles with carefully planned turns.

System requirements
On Steam, the minimum configuration for Windows includes, among other things, a 64-bit operating system, a processor in the Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD FX-6300 class, 6 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 750 Ti, Radeon R7 360 or Intel Arc A310. The PC store lists around 93 GB of free storage space. The recommended requirements are higher, for example a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon RX 480.
For the Switch 2 version, Nintendo instead lists roughly 62 GB. These are store figures for different native versions, not interchangeable minimum values. Before buying, the current product listing for the respective platform is the authoritative source.

Archetypes instead of fixed classes
The central progression system is called Archetypes. Characters can take on different roles, including classes geared toward melee, magic, healing and defense. Further developments and combinations become available later. Choosing an archetype thus changes a character's tools without swapping out their identity as part of the story.
Skills can be sensibly combined across classes. A group can focus on high damage spikes or deliberately play defensively when an enemy demands unusually many resources. The system rewards experimenting with party combinations rather than one permanent default lineup.

Time, relationships and choice
The throne vote and the journey are embedded in a calendar. Whoever spends a day on a dungeon outing cannot also handle personal tasks everywhere at once. Encounters with supporters, nurturing relationships and developing social traits thus compete with exploration and preparation for the same time.
This creates a distinct kind of strategy beyond battles: not every plan can be completed at any time, and decisions gain weight through deadlines. The relationships serve both character development and unlock development options. What is useful for a choice must be weighed against short-term challenges.

Traveling with the Gauntlet Runner
As a mobile base, the group uses the so-called Gauntlet Runner. The vehicle combines longer journeys between settlements and quest locations with time for conversations and preparation. Stops along the way are therefore part of the role-playing and not just a backdrop for fast travel.
The world is also explored along this route: different population groups, local conflicts and the distribution of political power become visible in the search for allies. The kingdom's history thus unfolds alongside the growth of your own group.

Editions and additional content
Alongside the regular release, digital and physical collector's editions with additional content were offered, including art material, music and costume packs. Some digital bonuses draw on other Atlus games in terms of design. These packs must be distinguished from a standalone story sequel or a new native platform version.
When comparing offers, it is therefore key whether only the base game, an edition with bonus material or the full download for a specific platform is meant. The Nintendo Switch 2 version remains the same basic role-playing story and is not advertised as a separate sequel.

A standalone Atlus role-playing game
Atlus developed Metaphor: ReFantazio under the Studio Zero label. The design combines a stylized fantasy world with the studio's familiar strengths: an extensive story, memorable characters, complex group systems and close ties between game mechanics and everyday life.
Despite personnel and creative overlaps with Persona's development, Metaphor has its own kingdom, its own cast and a standalone political conflict. It is neither a numbered sequel to Persona nor a spin-off set within that series.

Prologue demo on Nintendo Switch 2
A standalone Prologue Demo is available for the standalone Switch 2 version. Atlus confirmed on Oct 13, 2026 that progress made in it can be carried over to the planned launch of the full Switch 2 version on Nov 12, 2026. The confirmation refers to the demo and full version for the same Nintendo platform, not to a save transfer from PC or PlayStation.
The demo introduces the story and basic gameplay. Its download and regional availability depend on the Nintendo eShop in question. The demo belongs to the Switch 2 product family, not to the original Nintendo Switch.
