What is Rayman Legends?

Rayman Legends is a platformer by Ubisoft Montpellier from 2013. Rayman, Globox and the Teensies travel through enchanted paintings into different game worlds. The adventure combines classic 2D platforming sections with the search for hidden captives, boss enemies and levels whose obstacles are tuned to music.

As the successor to Rayman Origins, the game can be played alone or, depending on the platform, with several people locally. The Nintendo Wii U version additionally uses touchscreen help via Murfy.

Gameplay

Rayman Legends combines precise jumping, running and attacking with hidden paths. The characters move through painting worlds, dodge traps, collect Lums and free captured Teensies. Some sections end in boss fights, others demand speed and precise reactions.

The music levels are fixed parts of the campaign: obstacles and movement sequences are rhythmically synced to the soundtrack. Murfy helps at certain points by clearing paths or changing parts of the environment.

Local co-op and Murfy

Rayman Legends offers local co-op for four players on many platforms. On Wii U, a fifth person can help as Murfy via the GamePad's touchscreen, changing obstacles and opening new paths. This asymmetric mode is a feature of the Wii U version and cannot be transferred to all other versions.

Switch: Definitive Edition

The Nintendo Switch received a native Definitive Edition on September 12, 2017. Nintendo includes over 100 tracks, music levels, local four-player co-op and the Kung Foot competition. A dedicated input option is the touchscreen in handheld mode.

On Switch 2, this version can run as compatible Switch software according to Nintendo. This does not mean a standalone native Switch 2 release.

Online features and availability

The Xbox 360 store page currently states that this edition no longer offers online features. Local co-op is a separate matter, as is the server situation of the other platform versions.

No new purchases have been possible on the Wii U eShop since March 27, 2023. This change in distribution says nothing about whether versions already purchased or physical discs remain playable.

Game series

Ubisoft Montpellier developed Rayman Legends as the successor to Rayman Origins. Both share the fast 2D gameplay, collectibles and the series' humor. Legends adds painting worlds, special Murfy sections and extensive local multiplayer options.

Rayman Legends Retold is a reinterpretation on modern hardware, announced separately later, and is not listed as DLC or a native console port of the 2013 game. Both have their own product families.
