Gameplay

In Ashenfall, you gather resources, craft tools and gear, and build your own settlements. There are numerous skills to train, and Jagex ties this progression to quests, exploration and large dragon battles.

Magic is more than a combat option: spells can also help with gathering, building and exploring. The game can be played solo, but it is also designed for co-op groups of up to four players.

DLCs and expansions

Dragonwilds was already expanded during Early Access through major free content updates. Fellhollow added farming, new building options and another dragon boss, among other things. Umbral Sands brought a desert region, a flying carpet as a mount, the Kalphite Queen, Fuzan and new endgame gear. Scorned Wilderness is a central part of version 1.0 and concludes the Kuldra saga.

The next major free content update, Luminance, arrives in December 2026. The update introduces the elves Ceridwen and her child, expands Ashenfall with Lyra, Songstones and Fairy Rings, adds elven gear and building parts in the style of Prifddinas, and brings a new skill, Prayer, to the game.

Blood Crystal Saga and new skills

In 2027, Jagex tells the Blood Crystal Saga in two major chapters. Song of Rebellion leads to Ailddinas and the forests corrupted by the Nos Clan. With this chapter, Hunter arrives as a new skill: players can sneak up on creatures, set traps and hunt Implings, Kebbits, bears and birds, among others. Jagex describes Hunter as the first of several new skills for 2027.

The second chapter, Crown of Night, leads into the areas of the Nos Clan, shaped by eternal darkness. There, the light of Seren plays a central role; well-known RuneScape weapons such as the Dark Bow and Ivandis Flail are also set to return. After Crown of Night, Dragonwilds' story is to continue with further free updates.

Dragonwilds is a standalone survival RPG set within the RuneScape universe. It takes familiar themes, creatures and skill systems, but is set in Ashenfall and takes its own survival and co-op approach rather than RuneScape's classic MMORPG model.
