Gameplay

RuneScape combines an open MMO world with a classless progression system. Players train skills such as Woodcutting, Fishing, Herblore, Crafting, Farming, Smithing, Slayer, Dungeoneering or Runecrafting, complete story quests, trade via the Grand Exchange and face bosses or other PvE and PvP challenges. Which activities take centre stage is largely up to you.

Havenhythe

Havenhythe is the major area expansion of the 25th anniversary year. Part II opens the eastern half of the island and expands it with Berylbrook, Heathervein, Moonsylvar Wood, Fenmoor and Shuruk-Ba. The quest Heralds of Crimson concludes the Havenhythe section of the Sanguine storyline, while the overarching story continues. New areas combine exploration with higher-level requirements and additional skilling options, including new Woodcutting content in Fenmoor.

RuneScape Reignited cancelled – modernization continues

Jagex cancelled the RuneScape Reignited project on Oct 15, 2026, which had originally been announced for December 2026. An additional permanent character type with its own economy, a separate Grand Exchange, standalone Hiscores and separate boss instances will therefore not be introduced. The previously announced split between existing and new characters is no longer part of the main game's future.

The longer-term overhaul of the existing RuneScape continues nonetheless. For Dec 2, 2026, the Gielinor Adventure Guide as a guide through content and the first part of the Remastered Journey with modernized early game sections are planned. Further parts of this overhaul are due in 2027. Officially supported plugins are announced for Oct 19, 2026.

A ten-day free members' trial from Dec 2 to 12, 2026 is set to apply to newly created characters and existing characters that have had no active membership since June 2, 2026. It covers RuneScape, not Old School RuneScape. These are the access conditions that remain after the cancellation, not the introduction of a Reignited character type.
