Rotating the game world

A central mechanic connects the foreground and background layers. Shantae can rotate or shift parts of the landscape against each other to create new connections between paths, rooms and obstacles. This makes the spatial puzzles more than ordinary switch tasks: the layout of the environment itself changes.

A long-lost Game Boy Advance game

WayForward began the project in the early 2000s as a sequel to the first Shantae game. Work then stalled for many years. Only the later completion and release on a real Game Boy Advance cartridge made the lost adventure playable again. The digital versions for current devices followed in August 2025.

Game series

The story takes place between the first Shantae from 2002 and Shantae: Risky's Revenge from 2010. Although Risky Revolution only came out in 2025, it belongs narratively to the early adventures of the series. Recurring characters, transformations and the mix of exploration and action connect it with the other entries.
