Contra: Operation Galuga

Contra: Operation Galuga is a reinterpretation of the 1980s run-and-gun classic. WayForward combines side-scrolling firefights, new levels and boss enemies with a reworked weapon system. The game focuses on direct action rather than a freely explorable world.

Contra: Operation Galuga released on Mar 12, 2024 simultaneously for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Konami released the six versions digitally on the same day.

The game has native versions for Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. On PC, it is available at Steam and GOG, among others. Being playable on newer hardware alone does not justify an additional platform version.

Across eight stages, jump sections, moving obstacles and fights against numerous enemies alternate. Precise movement, the right firing direction and the use of suitable weapons often decide survival. Vehicles and large boss enemies liven up the flow.

For PC, there is the separately released Special Soundtrack. The Deluxe Edition bundles the main game with this music collection. It does not include an additional story campaign.

The Steam version requires Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, a graphics card at least on the level of a GeForce GTX 770 or Radeon RX 570, and DirectX 12. Steam lists 15 GB of free storage. For the recommended setup, a GeForce GTX 1060 is among the listed options.

The special unit Contra is sent to the Galuga Islands after the organization Red Falcon takes control. Bill Rizer and Lance Bean are to find out what lies behind the attacks and unusual events on the islands.

Machine gun, spread shot, laser and homing missiles cover different combat situations. Identical weapons can be combined to boost their effect. Sacrificing an equipped weapon activates a special effect via Overload, such as a shield or extra attacks.

Besides Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, more unlockable characters are available. The story's characters include island fighter Ariana and soldier Lucia. Their different abilities allow alternative approaches in the levels.

Story mode can be played alone or with one other player. Arcade mode lets up to four people fight together on one screen. On Steam, Remote Play Together is also supported, allowing local co-op to be shared over the internet.

The Story mode links eight stages through cutscenes and dialogue. Arcade drops these interruptions and supports four players. The Challenge mode also offers 30 special tasks, including time trials and fights with restrictions.

Three difficulty levels and additional settings adjust the challenge. On supported PlayStation systems, you can also view control tips and activate individual gameplay assists. The core principle remains an action-packed shooter with fast reactions.
