Gameplay

The Sonic part modernizes the structure of Sonic Generations: Classic Sonic plays more two-dimensionally, while Modern Sonic switches between 3D passages and side-on perspective. Replayable stages, collectibles and leaderboards encourage speedruns and route optimization.

Shadow Generations also uses 2D and 3D sections, but expands movement with Chaos Control and five Doom powers. This lets Shadow cross water, get around obstacles from the air and open new routes through areas you already know.

Shadow Generations and White Space

Shadow Generations is a standalone campaign within the package. Black Doom returns while Shadow travels through places from his past and unlocks new Doom powers.

Between the linear stages, Shadow explores White Space, a hub world whose structure is inspired by the open zones of Sonic Frontiers. New powers open additional routes, collectibles and access points there.

The three-dimensional hub world is more than just a level select: here you can test Shadow's abilities, unlock new stages and find hidden objects. Because Doom Powers are also used for movement, hub areas you have already visited can be explored in new ways later. The linear 2D and 3D action stages remain as standalone challenges.

The reworked Sonic Generations

The second part of the package is a remaster of Sonic Generations. Classic and Modern Sonic run through remastered versions of well-known 2D and 3D stages, while Dr. Eggman, his former self and the Time Eater throw the timeline into disarray.

The re-release improves graphics and cutscenes and adds bonus material, hidden Chao and additional collectibles.

Doom Powers: How Shadow opens new routes

Shadow's new Doom Powers are not just stronger attacks. Doom Spear hits multiple targets, Doom Blast knocks enemies away and teleports Shadow to its trajectory. With Doom Surf, he moves across water and can destroy obstacles while turning. Doom Morph changes his body so he can cross special terrain sections. Doom Wing enables aerial routes that Sonic does not have access to.

Abilities are unlocked over the course of Shadow Generations and change the paths through the levels. Sonic Team Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka explained in an official PlayStation interview that the developers wanted to deliberately distinguish Shadow's movement from Sonic's. The powers complement Chaos Control, which still opens up its own platforming and combat options.
