What is Tales of Eternia Remastered?

Tales of Eternia Remastered brings the action role-playing game from the PlayStation era to current platforms with modernized graphics and adjustable comfort features. The story takes place in the two opposing worlds of Inferia and Celestia. The looming collision, known as Great Fall, forces a initially small travelling party to look beyond the borders of their home.

Reid Hershel meets his childhood friend Farah Oersted and the mysterious Meredy, whose language they initially cannot understand. On their journey, the powers of the elemental spirits, the so-called Greater Craymels, become important. According to the publisher, the new version is by TOSE Co., Ltd. and is released under the Bandai Namco Entertainment label. It remains a standalone single-player RPG and is not a new chapter within a continuous Tales storyline.

Gameplay

At the heart is the Aggressive Linear Motion Battle System (A-LMBS). Battles take place in real time in a two-dimensional arena: players position their character, dodge enemy attacks and chain their own attacks with special techniques, the Artes. Other party members support with their own abilities.

The Remaster does not replace this battle system with turn-based menus. Bandai Namco explicitly says the classic structure is preserved. New optional assist features have been added that can make individual battle situations easier, without fully replacing the original rules.

Reid, Farah and Meredy between two worlds

Reid and Farah come from the village of Rasheans in Inferia. Meeting Meredy draws them into a conflict that threatens both Inferia and Celestia. Meredy's initially incomprehensible language and the differences between the two worlds mark the start of their shared quest.

The party tries to stop the catastrophe known as Great Fall. The elemental spirits Greater Craymels are more than a minor detail of the game world. The story of the Remaster follows the original Tales of Eternia, not a newly written sequel.

Guidance and optional random encounters

New destination markers help you find your next story step. On longer trips, you can interrupt travel when random enemy encounters occur. In the Remastered version, you can turn these encounters off and on again as you wish.

This change gives you real control over game pace: if you head for a story scene, you can skip extra battles, while targeted training remains possible. An accelerated auto-battle is also available for regular fights. How often you use these features is up to your own playstyle.

Boost, restart and group healing

Bandai Namco adds more help with Boost, Battle Retry and Quick Recovery. Battle Retry lets you try again after lost battles, while Quick Recovery helps the party recover. A high-speed mode shortens routine battles when auto-battle is active.

These systems are not announced as new character classes or additional adventures. They change how the familiar story plays and offer more room to maneuver, especially when returning to older RPG mechanics.

Two additional difficulty levels

Extreme is a new high difficulty that can be selected from the start. Unknown is said to be even harder. This option is unlocked after completing the game and is aimed at a second playthrough.

The new options sit alongside the comfort features. If you prefer to leave random encounters on and handle battles yourself, you can choose a more demanding setting instead of having to use the aids.

Original graphics and new look in one version

Players can switch graphics and sound effects between the original presentation and remastered mode. Bandai Namco explicitly describes the switch as a feature of the same game edition. These are not two separate games that would require a separate save data transfer.

If you prefer the PlayStation aesthetic, you don't have to give up the new control aids to get the original look. The improvements described by Bandai Namco mainly concern readability and pace, not a completely rebuilt game world.

Voice acting and text languages

According to Bandai Namco, the remaster offers English and Japanese voice acting to choose from. Steam lists, among other things, German user interface and German subtitles for the PC version. This does not mean full German voice acting.

Other store versions may list their own language information. Anyone who needs particular audio tracks on a console should check that platform's product page for the relevant region.

Standard, Deluxe and Upgrade Pack

Bandai Namco announces a Standard Edition and a digital Deluxe Edition. The standard version includes the remaster. The Deluxe Edition additionally includes a Super Growth Support Item Set, a Battle BGM pack with music from other Tales games, and a digital artbook and digital soundtrack.

A separately available Deluxe Upgrade Pack is also listed. It consists of additional media and comfort items, not a new chapter, another native platform or a standalone sequel. Store prices belong to the respective commercial edition and not to the permanent game description.

Game series

Tales of Eternia is part of Bandai Namco's long-running Tales of series. The 2026 return is part of a Remaster program that updates older episodes for today's platforms, both technically and in terms of controls. The story of Inferia and Celestia can be started without knowing other series entries.

While many Tales games share similar battle and party concepts, Eternia has its own cast. The Remaster is therefore a standalone game and is neither DLC for another Tales game nor content-wise equivalent to Tales of Arise or Tales of Berseria.
