What is THE FINALS?

THE FINALS is a free-to-play multiplayer shooter that presents competitions as a futuristic TV show. Teams compete in virtual arenas and try to secure cash boxes or control specific objectives. The unusually extensive destruction of the environment lets you blast your own routes through walls and floors.

The sci-fi shooter is developed and published by Embark Studios. Battles consist of short, intense rounds, while the mix of weapons, abilities and gadgets sets the pace of play.

Platforms

THE FINALS is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Windows version is sold via Steam, with an Embark account to link your progress. The game requires an internet connection.

The PS4 version that was previously available is no longer supported. An Xbox One version is not among the native editions. The Xbox Series version is therefore not just a backward compatibility version.

Gameplay

In THE FINALS, buildings, walls and ceilings don't stay unchanged. Explosions can bring down entire floors and suddenly expose a position that was once safe. Other players use debris and new passages to surprise opponents or reach the objective.

Destruction is therefore more than scenery: it affects cover, lines of sight and the route to cash boxes. Makeshift bridges and barricades can also decide which team holds an area.

Cashout: secure and defend the cash

In Quick Cash mode, three teams of three face each other. You open a safe, bring the cashbox to a Cashout station and defend it until the payout is complete. Another team can take over the station during that time.

The station's placement and the remaining time are often more important than individual kills. Whoever destroys cover or shortens a route can turn a payout that seemed lost.

Tournaments and ranked

The Cashout tournament structure features eight teams of three players each. The best teams from the preliminary rounds reach the decisive matches. In ranked mode, revives and re-entries are limited, so team coordination matters a lot.

Besides the ranked tournaments, there are regular Cashout matches and ongoing World Tour progression. The core of tournaments is controlling the cash stations, not the raw number of kills.

Point Break: Attack vs. Defense

Point Break pits eight players on each side against each other. Attackers must destroy nine large safes across three phases in total, while defenders protect the targets.

Attackers have limited re-entries. That makes the decision of when a team attacks, breaks through cover or first secures the push important.

Power Shift and Team Deathmatch

In Power Shift, two teams of five fight over a moving platform. Whoever controls it and escorts it furthest toward the goal wins. Opponents can interrupt the route with attacks and destroyed cover.

Team Deathmatch focuses on direct combat: two teams of five players try to eliminate more opponents than the other side.

Light, Medium and Heavy

Three body classes create different conditions for combat. Light characters move faster and are suited to surprise attacks. Medium figures combine all-round weapons with team support, while heavy figures focus on firepower, protection and destruction.

Your body class affects the weapons, equipment and specializations available to you. A balanced team can hold objectives, treat injured teammates and open a new attack route when needed.

Weapons, gadgets and abilities

Besides firearms, melee weapons, shields, explosives, defibrillators, zip lines and movement aids are part of the gear. This lets you not only injure opponents, but also steer their movement or open a different route through the arena.

Abilities such as healing, cloaking or especially powerful attacks complement classic weapon choice. The available combination depends on the chosen body type.

Arenas and locations

The game areas draw on striking architecture from cities and purpose-built competition arenas. Monaco, Seoul and Skyway Stadium are long-term locations and have been reworked with better movement routes and expanded destruction options.

Since you change the built environment, the same location also offers different cover and attack routes in later rounds.

Training and private matches

The practice arena lets you try out weapons, gadgets and specializations without immediate competitive pressure. A tutorial explains the Cashout rules, and you can also play bot matches to get started.

In private matches, you can set up maps, rules and participants. These matches do not affect the ranked list or regular progression.

Crossplay and save progress

THE FINALS supports cross-platform matches and carrying over your progress on supported systems. The Embark ID links the accounts used for this.

The link is especially important for former PS4 players: since that version ended, they have to switch to PC, PS5 or Xbox Series to keep playing.

Free-to-play and customization

THE FINALS is free to download and includes optional in-game purchases. You can customize your character with clothing, accessories and other cosmetic items.

Sponsors and reward paths are part of the game show's backstory. The actual duels are decided by teamwork, weapon choice and control of the arena.

Team communication and controls

Markers and communication wheels help you coordinate targets, positions and your own gear without constant voice chat. Eliminated players can also give hints to their teammates via the communication wheel.

Embark has added extra settings to the controller scheme for automatic movement, interactions and aim assist. The options are available regardless of a specific map or event cycle.

Language and access

On PC, THE FINALS offers German menus and on-screen text, plus other languages. German voice audio is not listed on Steam. The arenas are accompanied by commentators, some of whose voices are generated with text-to-speech technology.

An internet connection and an Embark ID are required to play online. On PC, the game also uses anti-cheat technology with deep system access.
