Toukiden 2

Toukiden 2 is an action RPG by Omega Force in which demon hunters fight giant Oni. Battles combine different melee weapons, destructible body parts and the powers of historical souls, the Mitama.

Unlike the more mission-based predecessors, Toukiden 2 takes you through a connected world centred on the village of Mahoroba. From here, players explore dangerous regions, upgrade their equipment and hunt alone or together.

Toukiden 2 was released in Japan on Jul 28, 2016 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PS Vita. The PC version came out on Steam on Mar 21, 2017. In Europe, the PS Vita version followed on Mar 24, 2017.

The German PlayStation Store lists Apr 20, 2017 for the PS4 version. The PS5 version playable there uses backward compatibility and is not a separate PS5 release.

Toukiden 2 was released natively for PC, PS4, PS3 and PS Vita. The PS3 version was released in Japan only. The European PS4 and PS Vita versions were part of the later Western release.

The Japanese PlayStation Blog describes cross-platform play and shared save data between the PlayStation systems of the time. Steam lists single-player and online co-op. There is no standalone PS5 version.

In battles, hunters target large demons on their arms, legs and other vulnerable body parts. Destroying a part exposes the Oni's life energy beneath it. Purifying the part afterwards prevents the enemy from regenerating the lost body part.

Different weapons and support forces determine whether a team attacks from a safe distance, binds the enemy or strikes the decisive blow at the right moment.

Four Mission Collection Sets with nine additional missions each were released for Toukiden 2. There are also smaller costume packs for various characters.

The missions expand the challenges after the main story. Costumes, on the other hand, mainly change appearance and are not standalone game content.

According to Steam, the PC version requires a 64-bit Windows system, DirectX 11 and 17 GB of free storage. The store lists 3 GB RAM, an Intel Core i7-870 and a GeForce GTS 450 as the minimum.

Recommended: 5 GB RAM, a Core i7-2600 and a GeForce GTX 660. An internet connection is required for online co-op.

The story begins with a catastrophe in Yokohama. A demon hunter disappears during the Oni attack and awakens ten years later in Mahoroba, with no memory of their past.

In the village, the hunter meets a scientist, the mechanical companion Tokitsugu and other fighters, among others. The search for answers leads through areas where space and time have become scrambled.

Around Mahoroba stretch six larger areas that draw on different eras of Japan. They include locations with crumbling temples, icy landscapes, castles, forests and vast deserts.

The regions can be explored, offer side quests and contain materials for new equipment. Dangerous demon mist limits how long fighters can stay in particularly tainted areas.

With the Demon Hand, hunters can pull enemies towards them and attack from unusual angles. It is also important when exploring: it helps you reach ledges and clear certain obstacles.

In battle, this ability complements your regular weapon arsenal. Attacks on large Oni become more agile as a result, while severed body parts still need to be purified.

Large Oni have several vulnerable zones. The Demon Eye makes vulnerable body parts visible. Once they are destroyed, the enemy briefly exposes its energy.

If you don't purify a severed part, the Oni risks regenerating it. Especially powerful techniques can destroy parts completely, permanently restricting the enemy's movements.

Mitama are souls from history that grant combat styles and abilities. Some boost attacks or defence, while others improve mobility, healing or the use of elemental powers.

By choosing different Mitama, players can change their role. An offensive hunter sets up their equipment differently than a fighter who protects or supports allies.

Your choice of weapon changes reach, tempo and possible combinations. Fast blades suit agile attacks, while heavier weapons require more deliberate timing.

Mitama abilities complement your arsenal. Against especially large Oni, dealing damage is not the only thing that matters; targeted destruction and purification of individual body parts is just as important.

The little Tenko can be rescued from dangerous areas, looked after and delighted with gifts. With a sufficiently strong bond, they will also accompany the hunter on explorations.

Mechanical helpers collect raw materials in the world. These materials can be used to craft new weapons and armour and to upgrade existing equipment.

Toukiden 2 supports cooperative fighting against Oni. Online co-op is listed on Steam. The Japanese PlayStation versions planned co-operation with up to four players.

In a team, you can coordinate attacks on different body parts. One player can keep an Oni busy while others work on its weak points or clean up parts that have already been destroyed.

The PC version offers English and Japanese on-screen text. Voice audio is available in Japanese. German on-screen text or German dubbing is not offered on Steam.

The German PlayStation Store also lists English on-screen text and Japanese voices for the PS4 version.
