What is We Were Here Together?

We Were Here Together is a cooperative puzzle adventure told from a first-person perspective by Total Mayhem Games. Two members of an Antarctic expedition follow a distress call from the ice. The search leads from the research base camp through snowy landscapes to Castle Rock.

The game is designed for exactly two players in online co-op. Both receive different information and must share their observations via walkie-talkie to move forward together. A single-player campaign mode is not planned.

Gameplay

Most puzzles rely on asymmetric perspectives. One player sees, for example, signs or mechanisms that the other cannot reach. Solutions only emerge through precise description, asking questions and reasoning together. Communication is part of the mechanics and not just an add-on to the actual game.

The journey begins at the Antarctic research outpost. Later, the two characters explore snowy areas and the winding Castle Rock. Shared scenes alternate with situations in which they are physically apart. The mysterious story of the expedition ties the puzzle rooms together.

Communication as a game mechanic

The two players often see different information and must explain symbols, rooms or processes via Walkie-Talkie. Describing precisely and listening therefore replace part of the usual hints on the screen.

Steam describes the adventure explicitly as playable only in co-op. Both players need access to the game, a microphone and internet. The developer support explains that with the virtual walkie-talkie, speaking at the same time does not always work like in a normal voice chat.

Cross-platform co-op

On Oct 9, 2025, Total Mayhem Games enabled crossplay for the older three We Were Here games, including Together. Since then, players can connect across PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

The feature permanently expands player matchmaking, but does not create cross-platform purchase eligibility. On consoles, the requirements of the respective online service still apply. Stable connections and microphones remain important for the puzzles.

Game series

We Were Here Together is the third part of the We Were Here series developed and published by Total Mayhem Games. The common thread is cooperative puzzles with two unequal perspectives and the exchange via walkie-talkies.

Together expands the locations of the earlier adventures with the research base camp and the icy paths to Castle Rock. The ongoing backstory revolves around, among others, the mysterious figure of the Jester. Other series episodes are standalone games, not automatically part of this product.
