What is Assassin's Creed Odyssey?

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is an action role-playing game set in an open version of ancient Greece. You accompany Kassandra or Alexios in the search for their own family and get drawn into the conflict between Athens and Sparta. Instead of a fixed hero story, your dialogue choices, allies and exploration shape the course of numerous quests.

The adventure combines sword fights, sneaking, equipment and travel across the sea. Historic cities, islands and mythological stories all belong to the same game world.

Gameplay

Odyssey combines melee combat with free dodging, ranged abilities and silent approaches. With Leonidas's spear, you unlock special abilities. Weapons, armour pieces and equipment stats change your character's strengths, while different enemies force you to switch tactics.

You can explore the world on foot, on horseback and with your own ship. At sea, you fight enemy crews, upgrade your trireme and can recruit new crew members.

Kassandra, Alexios and the consequences of your choices

At the start, you choose Kassandra or Alexios. Both lead you through the main story, but you decide with dialogue options, relationships and choices how individual conflicts develop. Allies can take on different roles, and several storylines have different outcomes.

The main story tells of the family conflict of a Spartan mercenary and of the Peloponnesian War. Additional stories lead to historical figures and the secrets of the First Civilization.

The Greece of the Peloponnesian War

The open world covers the Greek mainland and numerous islands of the Aegean. Athens and Sparta face each other in a historic conflict, while smaller regions offer their own quests, fortresses and dangers.

Discoveries are not limited to settlements. Ruins and treasures lie under water, and camps, caves and battlegrounds are spread across the land. The variety of places is closely tied to exploring on foot and by ship.

Naval battles and the Adrasteia

With the Adrasteia, you command your own ship and sail between the islands. In battles, you must hold position relative to enemy ships, deploy your crew, and weaken or board enemy ships.

You can upgrade the Adrasteia and recruit crew members for your team. This makes sea travel not just a fast way to get around, but an independent part of the battles.

Weapons, armor and abilities

Swords, spears, bows and other weapons differ in reach, speed and bonuses. Helmets, chest armor, arm guards and other armor pieces also affect your character's appearance and stats.

With unlocked abilities you shape your style between offensive combat, ranged attacks and silent takedowns. Equipment supports these choices instead of prescribing a fixed character class.

How does The Fate of Atlantis begin?

The regular entry into the Atlantis story requires an advanced character and several completed quest chains. Ubisoft also offers a shortcut with a specially prepared character at level 52.

Anyone who uses the shortcut plays the expansion separately from their own campaign progress. Progress made there is not carried over to the actual save game.

Discovery Tour: Explore Greece without combat

The Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece opens the game world as an interactive educational space. Instead of combat, the focus is on guided stops covering culture, daily life, architecture, philosophy and warfare. Short quizzes accompany the tours.

This mode is a different way to experience the existing Greek world. It complements the RPG without having to replace the main story or its progression systems.

Your own stories with Story Creator Mode

The Story Creator Mode lets you design your own quests and dialogue and share them with others. The browser-based editor offers various mission objectives, such as rescuing a person, reaching a location or carrying out an attack.

Branching dialogue allows multiple paths through the same story. Published quests can be played on supported platforms, even if their authors created them on another system.

Side quests and free stories

Beyond the main storyline, Odyssey offers regional tasks, encounters with historical figures and its own stories. The free Lost Tales of Greece add further narratives with new and familiar characters.

Many of these stories can be played independently of the two paid major story expansions. They are not the same as the regularly changing tasks in the game world.

Game series

Odyssey was developed mainly by Ubisoft Quebec. Other Ubisoft studios also contributed to development. Ubisoft released the game as part of the Assassin's Creed series.

The story goes far back before the founding of the later Assassin Brotherhood and relies more on free choices, role-playing systems and open exploration. This sets Odyssey apart in how it feels to play from the earlier entries, which focused more on fixed missions.
