Platforms
The five original native platforms are PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S did not get a standalone native Far Cry 4 version. There, the game runs via backward compatibility. A free Ubisoft update from April 29, 2025, enables 60 frames per second on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S. This improvement is not a new platform release.
On PC, the Steam version is linked to a Ubisoft account.

Gameplay
Kyrat combines dense valleys, rivers and villages with dangerous mountain regions. Players capture enemy outposts, complete missions, explore the world and gather materials. In combat, you can attack openly or proceed carefully, and weapons and vehicles can be used to suit the mission.
The gyrocopter, the wingsuit and the wildlife are especially distinctive. Leopards, rhinos and other animals make the wilderness unpredictable, while elephants can even be used in combat. The varied landscape invites you to complete missions in your own way.

Cooperative play
Far Cry 4 supports drop-in/drop-out co-op in the open world of Kyrat. A second player can help with shared exploration and attacks on outposts. Co-op is part of the base game, but it is not available in the same form for every story campaign mission.

Ajay Ghale, Pagan Min and the civil war
Ajay Ghale returns to Kyrat to fulfil his mother's final wish. The self-proclaimed king Pagan Min rules the country by force, while the resistance movement Golden Path fights his regime. Ajay's original journey thus becomes a conflict linking his family's past with Kyrat's future.
The story provides the framework for the open world, which allows for plenty of exploration and side quests alongside the main plot.

Shangri-La and the mountain world
The Himalayan region offers more than ordinary outposts: high-altitude missions lead into icy heights, while the Shangri-La sections form a mythological counterpoint. There, players explore a spiritual environment and encounter unusual enemies. A white tiger accompanies the hero during these story passages, and the bow plays an important role.
These areas bring a very different look and pace to the otherwise realistic open world.

Arena, multiplayer and map editor
Alongside the solo campaign, Far Cry 4 offers a combat arena where players face armed enemies and animals. The competitive multiplayer mode picks up the country's conflict and pits fighters of the Golden Path against the Rakshasa, who have special abilities.
A map editor lets you create and share your own scenarios. These tools are part of the original game and should be distinguished from later expansions.

Travel and exploration in Kyrat
You can explore the landscape on foot, on roads, across rivers and from the air. Alongside cars and tuk-tuks, you have a hovercraft, the light gyrocopter and a wingsuit. The different altitudes shape movement in particular: between villages in the valley, forested areas and dangerous mountain slopes, both the view and the dangers change.
Ubisoft uses this variety for missions where the journey and the terrain are key parts of the gameplay.

Game series
Far Cry 4 is a standalone main entry in the Far Cry series. The story in Kyrat does not require knowledge of the story from Far Cry 3. The focus is again on an open world, freely approachable enemy outposts and a mix of combat, exploration and side activities. The Himalayan setting, Pagan Min and the special Shangri-La passages set it apart from other series entries.
