Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 is an open-world first-person shooter by Ubisoft. On the fictional Caribbean island of Yara, Dani Rojas joins the resistance against the government of Antón Castillo. In the connected game world, mission objectives can be approached in different ways, such as with improvised weapons, vehicles and support from companions.

The campaign can be played alone or online with one other person. Players explore rural areas and cities, liberate military outposts and build ties with rebel groups.

Far Cry 6 was released on Oct 7, 2021 for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The Steam release on May 11, 2023 was an additional distribution launch of the existing PC version, not a new native game.

Ubisoft later expanded Far Cry 6 with larger paid DLCs and permanent free features, including New Game+ and the Lost Between Worlds expansion.

The base game has native versions for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. PS5 and Xbox Series are standalone current-gen releases, not merely backward-compatible versions of their predecessors.

The PC version was offered at launch on the Ubisoft Store and Epic Games Store, and later also came to Steam. Amazon Luna is a cloud service, not an additional native console platform. The historical Stadia release also does not count as a current native platform.

Far Cry 6 combines freely explorable regions with main missions, resistance tasks and capturing military outposts. In Yara, paths lead through cities, fields, beaches and wooded areas. Players can sneak up, fight from a distance, or use vehicles and heavy equipment.

Dani is shown from the outside in certain story sequences and speaks, while exploration and combat take place in first person. Equipment, enemies and terrain determine which approach makes sense for a mission.

The Season Pass includes the three playable antagonist episodes Vaas: Insanity, Pagan: Control and Joseph: Collapse. They let players dive into the minds of well-known Far Cry villains. It also includes Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition, a standalone re-release and not another episode of Far Cry 6.

Lost Between Worlds was released on Dec 6, 2022 as a separately available story expansion. Dani travels through alternative, distorted versions of Yara, solves challenges in connected rifts and fights crystalline enemies. The expansion is part of the Game of the Year Edition, but not automatically part of the original Season Pass.

Ubisoft lists as minimum configuration Windows 10 (64-bit), an AMD Ryzen 3 1200 or Intel Core i5-4460, 8 GB RAM, and a Radeon RX 460 or GeForce GTX 960, each with 4 GB of graphics memory. For 60 FPS, Ubisoft recommends among others Ryzen 5 3600X or Core i7-7700, 16 GB RAM and RX Vega 64 or GTX 1080.

The optional HD texture pack requires at least 12 GB of graphics memory according to Ubisoft. The actual free disk space needed depends on platform, version and installed extra data; official store listings differ on this.

The fictional Caribbean country of Yara is under the authoritarian rule of Antón Castillo, who is preparing his son Diego to succeed him. Dani Rojas initially wants to leave the island, but gets drawn into the conflict and joins the resistance organization Libertad under Clara García.

Players can experience Dani as a woman or a man. The character is fully voiced and has a role of their own in the story. Antón Castillo is played by Giancarlo Esposito.

A core part of the equipment is the Resolver principle: the guerrillas turn materials and everyday devices into functional weapons. Alongside conventional firearms there is improvised special equipment, which can be used to take on larger enemy groups or vehicles, for example.

Supremo backpacks expand your arsenal with powerful special abilities. The equipment system allows different playstyles, such as stealthy operations or direct attacks. Your choice of weapons therefore has a clear impact on how a firefight plays out.

The animal companions in Far Cry 6 are called Amigos. The dachshund Chorizo is good for distracting soldiers, while the crocodile Guapo can attack enemies directly. The rooster Chicharrón is also one of the companions.

Amigos expand your tactical options but do not replace a second player in co-op. Depending on the animal you choose, the ability supports either sneaking up unnoticed or open combat.

The Standard Edition includes the base game. The Deluxe Edition adds the Ultimate Pack with extra items and equipment. The Gold Edition focuses on the Season Pass with the three villain episodes and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition.

The Game of the Year Edition also bundles the story expansion Lost Between Worlds. To judge how much game you actually get, what matters is whether an edition includes full additional campaigns or mainly equipment packs. Individual DLCs are also available separately.

Far Cry 6 supports the campaign in online co-op for two players. Both can play missions together and, according to Ubisoft, make progress. Local split-screen mode is not offered.

For playing together, Ubisoft distinguishes cross-generation within a console family from cross-platform play. PlayStation generations can play with each other, as can Xbox generations. For save files, there is a separate cross-progression feature: saves can be uploaded manually and downloaded on another supported platform. This does not mean that PC and console players can be connected in co-op at will.

With the free update on Nov 29, 2022, Ubisoft added New Game+. After completing the main campaign, players can start a new run with a large part of the previously unlocked equipment. Missions and world progress are reset in the process.

The Completionist Aid belongs to the same expansion of the main game and helps you find remaining activities. Both features are long-term parts of the game and not time-limited events.

Ubisoft offers several presets for vision, hearing and control needs. Among other things, you can adjust subtitle and interface size, contrast, colours and the visibility of hints. Closed captions can display important game sounds with directional cues.

In addition, there are options for key binding, one-handed controller settings on supported hardware and menu text-to-speech. The Steam version includes German text, subtitles and voice audio.

Cars, boats, horses and aircraft are available for getting around Yara. Ubisoft adds individually equipped Guerrilla variants of classic vehicles, which can be used in combat.

The landscape ranges from dense vegetation across coasts and country roads to urban locations. As a result, lines of sight, escape routes and the choice of sensible equipment change between missions.
