What is Far Cry 5?
Far Cry 5 is an open-world first-person shooter from Ubisoft, set in the fictional Hope County in the US state of Montana. There, the self-proclaimed prophet Joseph Seed has built a violent rule through the group Project at Eden's Gate. As a newly arrived deputy, the player character is immediately drawn into the conflict between the cult and the local resistance.
Unlike a linear shooter campaign, exploring the open region largely sets the pace: outposts, allied locals, side missions and the three cult areas interlock. The game combines firefights and stealth routes with driving and flying vehicles, hunting and building a resistance movement.

Release
Far Cry 5 was released in March 2018. Steam lists March 26, 2018 for the PC version, while the console versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are listed with March 27, 2018. Developers were Ubisoft Montreal along with other Ubisoft teams and Red Storm Entertainment; the publisher is Ubisoft.
The main campaign is a complete game. The Season Pass, Gold Edition, Deluxe package and the story expansions are separate from it: they change the scope of each edition, but not the identity of the base game.

Platforms
The original native versions were released for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Thanks to backward compatibility, the console version can also be played on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. In March 2023, Ubisoft released a free 60 FPS patch for use on these newer consoles, covering the main game, co-op, Arcade and DLC.
Important: The 60 FPS support does not make the PS4 or Xbox One version a standalone native PS5 or Xbox Series release. On PC, Steam also lists Ubisoft Connect as a required third-party account and launcher.

Gameplay
The player liberates outposts, explores settlements, collects weapons and vehicles, and supports the people of Hope County. Resistance activities pressure the leaders of the various cult territories and open up further encounters and missions. A single approach is rarely prescribed: sneaking, ranged combat, vehicles and direct assault are all possible.
One highlight is the Guns for Hire and Fangs for Hire. Human companions handle specialized tasks, while animal helpers such as the dog Boomer or the bear Cheeseburger open up other tactical options. This means combat varies even independently of your own equipment.

DLCs and expansions
Three standalone scenario expansions were released for Far Cry 5. Hours of Darkness moves the story to a Vietnam War setting. Lost on Mars takes a science-fiction approach to Mars and features, among other things, fights against alien creatures. Dead Living Zombies consists of seven film-style zombie scenarios centred on director Guy Marvel.
Ubisoft offers this content separately as well as in the Season Pass. The Deluxe Pack, by contrast, is an add-on bundle and not a fourth major story DLC. Which content is already included depends on the edition you buy.

Co-op campaign: playing together and progress
The campaign can be played online with two people. After the introduction section, the host can invite a friend into the running game. The second player takes on their own character and can keep money, looted items and personal upgrades, among other things.
There is one important limitation for co-op progress: world and mission progress is saved on the host. The guest therefore does not automatically take over all liberated regions into their own save. Ubisoft also describes invitations via the friends list rather than random player matchmaking. If you want to play the campaign together long-term, know this rule before you start.

Far Cry Arcade: map editor and community modes
Far Cry Arcade is a separate area alongside the story campaign. The map editor lets you build locations and play situations and share them with others. The tool supports solo missions, cooperative tasks and competitive PvP maps. Ubisoft integrated access into the game world rather than only into a separate menu.
Arcade is therefore more than a repeat of the regular outposts: custom rules and maps extend the game into other play styles. The mode is part of the base game, not a separate commercial release.

Game series
Far Cry 5 belongs to the Far Cry series published by Ubisoft, but its story takes place in a standalone US setting. The later Far Cry New Dawn revisits Hope County and continues the world after the events of Far Cry 5. It is a separate game and should not be confused with the Season Pass or a Gold Edition.
