Samurai Warriors 5

Samurai Warriors 5 is an action game from studio Omega Force. The sequel, released in 2021, retells the Sengoku era through the characters Nobunaga Oda and Mitsuhide Akechi. The Musou combat system includes large battles, special attacks and switching between officers.

In Japan, Samurai Warriors 5 came out on June 24, 2021 for PS4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. Koei Tecmo gives July 27, 2021 as the release date for Europe. The PC store Steam lists July 26, 2021 as a separate date.

These details distinguish regional releases and the Steam date shown. The game has been available since 2021.

Native versions exist for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. According to Koei Tecmo, the PS4 version may run on PS5 via backward compatibility; the same applies to Xbox One on Xbox Series X|S. Support on newer consoles is not confirmation of standalone PS5 or Xbox Series versions.

On Steam, the PC version requires Windows 10 64-bit and DirectX 11.

The combat system combines attacks against large enemy masses with encounters against important enemy officers. The action set includes normal and Hyper attacks, the Musou attack, Rage and individual Ultimate Skills. During a mission, you can switch between characters.

Besides defeating enemies, mission objectives and control of key positions determine how a battle unfolds. Koei Tecmo's official manual explains the individual inputs and displays.

The Season Pass includes six packs with additional scenarios and music, five weapon packs with three weapons each, and six horse packs. The Digital Deluxe Edition combines the main game with the Season Pass and further bonus items.

This content should be distinguished from the standard edition. Add-on packs were also sold separately; there is no blanket equation of DLC, edition and base game.

The PC version requires at least Windows 10 (64-bit), an Intel Core i5-4460, 6 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 660 or Radeon R7 370, DirectX 11, and 25 GB storage. According to Steam, the minimum settings target 720p at 30 fps.

Recommended: an Intel Core i7-4770 or Ryzen 5 2600, 8 GB RAM, and a GeForce GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 590. The store recommendation lists 1080p and 60 fps with high graphics details. These are manufacturer figures, not our own performance tests.

The story begins after the Ōnin War and follows the power struggle of the Sengoku period up to the Honnōji Incident. The story is told from the perspective of Nobunaga Oda and Mitsuhide Akechi. Reworked character designs and new characters present this era differently from earlier series entries.

The game offers a dramatised portrayal of historical figures and events, not a documentary reconstruction.

In Musou Mode, you play the campaigns of Nobunaga and Mitsuhide. Citadel Mode focuses on defending a base, time-based scoring and deploying supporting troops.

The Treasure Vault archives completed goals, cutscenes, music and biographies. These modes are an integral part of the game.

Materials and gold allow upgrades to characters, weapons and buildings. The manual lists the dojo, forge, shop and stables as castle facilities. Their upgrades apply to both Musou Mode and Citadel Mode.

Characters used together can increase their friendship. At a high bond level, additional scenes are unlocked in the Hermit's Refuge.

According to Steam, the PC version supports online co-op as well as local split-screen co-op. The manual explains that online co-op is unlocked only after an early scenario in Nobunaga's campaign.

For consoles, details should be checked against the respective version; Steam features are no proof of identical options on all platforms.

On Steam, German is listed for the interface and subtitles. The voice audio is in Japanese, and no German dub is mentioned. The store lists adjustable difficulty and playability without quick-time events as features.

Supported PC inputs include controllers. Availability of individual comfort features on consoles needs to be checked separately.
