What is GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT?

GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT is a story-driven mecha action game by Bandai Namco Studios set in a new, self-contained Gundam timeline. At its center is the elite pilot RE-X, who pilots the Gundam Helix and, together with the Haro unit Vii, fights the mysterious threat Apocalypse.

The story takes players through various regions of the solar system and combines a cinematic science-fiction narrative with fast combat. Bandai Namco positions the game both as an entry point for new Gundam players and as a fresh take on the series for long-time fans.

Gameplay

GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT focuses on fast melee combat with high mobility. Light and heavy attacks, tactical skills and weapon-specific actions can be linked into combos. Some attacks move the Gundam Helix across the battlefield at the same time, so offense and evasion are closely intertwined.

The TGS 2026 demo offered three preconfigured loadouts: Assault Sword Assembly, Whip Sword Assembly and Sword Lance Assembly. Each setup significantly changes the combos and skill attacks. In addition, the Mobile Suit can be tailored to different playstyles with weapons, frames, thrusters and so-called Apocalypse Units (AP-U).

A central mechanic is OVER-RISE. Once the gauge is full, the Mobile Suit's performance rises significantly and special attacks become available. While OVER-RISE is active, the Gundam Helix automatically dodges enemy attacks, allowing particularly aggressive attack chains.

Mission planning: generator output and equipment

Before a mission, the Gundam Helix is prepared aboard the Stellarvane. Besides the main weapon and skill selection, head, torso, arm and leg segments as well as the thruster block can be swapped. The thruster block affects flight and evasion behavior: some variants are designed for aerial mobility, others for fast approach or retreat.

Combinations are not unlimited. According to the official PlayStation blog report of Oct 6, components consume generator output, so their total requirement must not exceed the generator limit. Upgrading equipment therefore also means giving up certain other components. For selected components, so-called Enhance properties shift the balance between mobility, durability and attack.

In addition, up to two tactical skills and two Apocalypse Units (AP-U) can be used. The AP-Us differ functionally: as examples, the PlayStation blog names Sylphide, which works with automatic support guns, and a shield unit called Guardian. Separate from equipment effects are purely cosmetic adjustments to colors and so-called MOD skins, which change appearance without increasing weapon stats.

Apocalypse bosses and destructible weak points

Large Apocalypse enemies have their own weak points according to the publisher, which can be specifically attacked and destroyed in combat. The new walkthrough shows the connection between preparing the Gundam Helix, its mobility and such boss encounters. With OVER-RISE, performance is temporarily increased, after which a particularly powerful AP Unit Burst can be triggered.

The official PlayStation preview describes the Mars mission Sand Planet as an example. There, environmental objects can become important in combat: explosive charges placed on the battlefield detonate after being shot and can hit an enemy hard if positioned correctly. This is shown by an interactive arena in this mission, but not yet by a full environmental destruction system for the entire game.

How much the playstyle depends on your own loadout cannot be judged independently from the limited TGS demo. The three weapon sets shown there were preconfigured; building your own Gundam in full was not yet accessible in the test version.

Game series

GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT tells a new story within the Gundam franchise and is not tied to an already established anime timeline. This allows the game to build its own cast, conflicts and Mobile Suits without requiring prior knowledge from other Gundam series.

The game is also part of the larger RG Project, which expands its science-fiction world across different media. For Rogue Orbit, however, the playable conflict around RE-X, the Gundam Helix and Apocalypse remains a self-contained entry point.
