KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue

KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue combines two playable adventures and one animated film that prepare for the story of KINGDOM HEARTS III. Dream Drop Distance HD follows Sora and Riku, 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage – follows Aqua, and χ Back Cover covers the early events around the Foretellers as a film.

The collection is to be distinguished from HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX and does not include the main game KINGDOM HEARTS III.

The collection's western debut was on Jan 24, 2017 for PlayStation 4. The native Xbox One edition followed on Feb 18, 2020. On Windows PC, the compilation first appeared on Mar 30, 2021 on the Epic Games Store, and on Jun 13, 2024 also on Steam. The Steam edition added later is not a separate PC platform.

Since Oct 8, 2026, there are new native editions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The earlier cloud version for the original Switch is not the same product as the native Switch 2 edition. If you buy a large KINGDOM HEARTS collection, check the included titles against the individual releases.

The available native versions include Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2. PS4 and Xbox One are separate generations of the collection, not just backward compatibility labels. The 2026 PS5 and Xbox Series editions are also separate native releases.

The Xbox Series version is listed on the store as optimized and with Xbox Play Anywhere. The Switch 2 version runs natively, whereas the package previously offered for Switch relied on cloud streaming. The old cloud license does not automatically become a native Switch 2 license.

Both playable parts combine real-time combat with exploration and Keyblade action. In Dream Drop Distance HD, Sora and Riku face their mastership exam. Their different paths and the switching between characters carry both the combat system and the story.

In 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage – Aqua takes the lead role. This shorter episode follows a different part of the story. The third work, the film χ Back Cover, contains no playable campaign.

The Windows version requires 8 GB RAM, DirectX 12 and 35 GB storage. Steam lists a GeForce GTX 760 with 2 GB or a Radeon R7 260X as the minimum graphics card. For 1080p at 60 fps, Square Enix recommends a GeForce GTX 1070 or Radeon RX Vega 56, among others.

Dream Drop Distance HD is a remaster of the action RPG with Sora and Riku, originally released for Nintendo 3DS. 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage – is a shorter, purpose-built interlude episode that picks up Aqua's fate. χ Back Cover is an animated film about the Foretellers and events from the early history of the series.

The bundle therefore contains two playable chapters and one film, not three equally sized full games. It places characters and conflicts ahead of KINGDOM HEARTS III.

The HD adventure follows Sora and Riku on their way to the Keyblade Mastership exam. Both follow their own storylines, which are intertwined. The remaster brings the game, originally developed for the Nintendo 3DS, to larger screens and keeps the character switching as an important structural feature.

This title forms the larger classic action RPG part of the collection and continues plot threads leading up to KINGDOM HEARTS III.

In KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage – you experience a standalone playable episode from the perspective of Aqua. The story ties into Birth by Sleep and explains her path through the darkness before KINGDOM HEARTS III.

The number 0.2 does not stand for another full main entry. The section is designed as a shorter link within the collection.

The third component is called KINGDOM HEARTS χ Back Cover. It tells the backstory around the Foretellers as an animated film. Unlike the other two components, it is not playable. It expands on the background of the series conflict and the Keyblade wielders.

On the original Nintendo Switch, HD 2.8 was previously available only as a cloud version. The Switch 2 edition released in October 2026 runs natively and belongs to a new product generation. An older cloud license cannot be equated with installing a new Switch 2 version.

Nintendo lists single-player play and the TV, tabletop and handheld play modes for Switch 2. The collection is also offered as part of larger KINGDOM HEARTS bundles.

The playable parts are designed for single player. On Steam, achievements and cloud saves are supported. The texts are available in German, among other languages. Voice acting and voice options depend on the specific version. For PC, English and Japanese voice options are listed.

Depending on the platform, save data and language packs may also be handled differently. The exact scope of features should therefore be checked with the respective store.
