Gameplay

The combat system is turn-based and built around exploiting enemy weaknesses. If you break an enemy’s defense, you can gain extra action phases and then prepare especially strong Resonance attacks. There is also a further developed job system, summons and classic party roles. The world is explored not only through battles but also through scouting, airship travel and optional challenges.

Story and world

The story follows Rain, a commander from Grandshelt, and his friend Lasswell. After Dark Veritas attacks the Earth Crystal, they set out together with Fina to protect the remaining crystals. The reimagining takes key characters and conflicts from the first Brave Exvius story arc, but stages them anew for a standalone JRPG.

Visions, jobs and resonance

26 visions of well-known Final Fantasy characters can be combined with the abilities of your own party in FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE. These include Cloud, Terra, Sephiroth and the Warrior of Light. Whoever wins a vision at the shrines can assign it to a party member and gets new attacks, spells and passive bonuses.

Battles raise mastery and bond with the visions. Learned abilities can still be used within a cost limit even when a different vision is active. This way the characters stay recognizable in their basic roles, but can take on very different tasks.

If you knock the enemy party completely off balance, you can trigger a resonance attack from an equipped vision. Producer Keisuke Nakashima describes the battle system idea as a blend of freely combinable jobs as in Final Fantasy V and the standalone character roles of Final Fantasy VI.

Espers: summons in battle

Espers are standalone summons and differ from the visions that stay equipped permanently. They are unlocked through the story and side quests and then join the party for three battle rounds.

At the end of their deployment, they perform a particularly strong final attack. While a vision changes a character's abilities long-term, an Esper joins the battle directly for a limited time.

Game series

FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is not a numbered series entry, but a standalone reimagining of the first story arc of FINAL FANTASY Brave Exvius. At the same time, the game draws on many long-standing elements of the main series: crystals, chocobos, airships, Espers and well-known heroes from earlier Final Fantasy games.
