Metro 2039

Metro 2039 is a single-player first-person shooter from 4A Games. The fourth major part of the series is set in the ruins of Moscow and its metro tunnels. At its centre is a former Spartan who returns from exile. Exploration, stealth, equipment management and direct combat shape the announced campaign.

The announced release date is Feb 4, 2027. According to Deep Silver, the launch falls on Feb 5 in some regions, including Australia and New Zealand. Since Oct 13, 2026, Standard, Deluxe and Collector’s Editions can be pre-ordered. The date remains a plan until the actual release.

Native versions are confirmed for PC via Steam, Epic and Xbox on PC, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox also mentions Play Anywhere. Physical editions are planned for the consoles, while the PC box includes a download code. PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch are not among the confirmed platforms.

Metro 2039 combines a scripted single-player story with routes through irradiated outer districts, abandoned buildings and the tunnels of Moscow. The stranger must keep an eye on radiation, gas mask filters and equipment. Stealth and open firefights are different approaches to dangerous situations.

The gameplay scenes shown so far feature firearms, mutants and environments that tie combat and exploration together. The footage shows a preview build, not verified performance of the final release version.

Deep Silver has announced a story expansion for 2027. It is part of the Deluxe and Collector’s Edition. Scope, setting and exact release date are not yet known. The Standard Edition includes the main game.

The separate Specialist Pack is a pre-order bonus with early unlocks for equipment. It is not an additional campaign.

Specific minimum and recommended PC components have not been reliably quantified on the official pages checked so far. The new 4A Engine uses ray tracing, but no reliable figures for graphics card, RAM or processor can be derived from this.

Technical details about the 60 FPS mode on consoles are not automatically performance promises for PC.

The story is set in 2039, after people have survived for a long time in the Metro under Moscow. Hunter, formerly a member of the Spartan Order, now rules the tunnel society with an authoritarian hand. The former Spartan named The Stranger returns from exile and is drawn into the conflict between the residents, their leadership and the dangers of the surface.

The story is announced as a standalone main part. How the conflict ends and what role earlier main characters play remains open.

A newly introduced mechanic is blueprints, which combine exploration with crafting weapon attachments and equipment upgrades. The Specialist Pack highlights three possible focuses: faster crafting of advanced items, more gas mask filters and access to special ammunition.

The backpack upgrades are interchangeable, but according to the publisher, only one can be equipped at a time. The pre-order bundle grants early unlocks of the three variants, not exclusive access to the entire blueprint system.

4A Games designed its in-house engine for Metro 2039 around ray tracing. Deep Silver lists a performance mode with ray tracing and 60 frames per second for PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X. The console footage released so far was recorded on PS5 Pro.

It has not yet been independently verified whether the finished versions consistently reach this performance. For the Xbox Series S and PCs with differing specs, identical graphics modes should not be assumed.

The Standard Edition contains the main game. The Digital Deluxe Edition additionally includes the story expansion announced for 2027, a digital artbook and the soundtrack. Physical Deluxe editions also include a steelbook and printed artbook. The Collector's Edition additionally contains a wearable replica of the Spartan helmet.

All of these editions belong to the same native game release. According to the manufacturer, the physical PC editions contain a code instead of a game disc. The availability of the Collector's Edition depends on the retailer and region.
