What is Riders Republic?

Riders Republic is an open-world extreme sports game from Ubisoft. Mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding, as well as wingsuit and rocket wingsuit flights, take place in the same rideable landscape. New competitions can be discovered just as well as free routes through the mountains.

Developed mainly by Ubisoft Annecy, the game was released in 2021. Careers, trick competitions and large online races add to a world where different sports blend seamlessly into one another. The controls are designed for accessible sports action rather than strict simulation.

Gameplay

The base game combines mountain bike races and tricks, ski and snowboard disciplines, and wingsuit flights. On the bike, descents depend on line choice and speed; in freestyle, on jumps and clean tricks. On skis and snowboard, you switch between park, backcountry and race courses. The rocket wingsuit brings very fast flights through the same landscape.

The sports are therefore not just different costumes. Depending on the competition, they demand different ways of moving and different approaches to risk. Away from fixed events, you can explore the open world freely, including descents and jumps you choose yourself.

DLCs and expansions

In September 2022, the BMX sports add-on followed, with its own career, the disciplines Street, Park and Dirt, and the Area 52 zone. On September 27, 2023, the skate add-on was released, with skateboard tricks and the park landscape The Deck.

These major expansions remain relevant long-term. Depending on the edition you buy, however, they are not automatically included in the base game. Seasonal events and cosmetic rewards are separate from these.

Crossplay and multiplayer modes

Riders Republic supports crossplay, mass races with large fields and several PvP modes. On PS5, Xbox Series and powerful PCs, Ubisoft describes races with more than 50 players. On PS4 and Xbox One, more than 20 players take part.

Tricks Battle offers 6-vs-6 competitions. There are also versus races and free-for-all. Online matches still require an internet connection. From Dec 9, 2026, the open world can also be explored offline in the new Nomad mode.

Careers and sponsors

Various career paths lead through races and trick competitions. Riders unlock new gear and win sponsors as they progress. Ubisoft names Red Bull Rampage and the X Games as inspirations for its special competitions.

You can customise your own rider. Be aware of the difference between performance gear, cosmetic extras and additional sport add-ons: not every later-released offer is part of the base game.

A game world of US national parks

The open map combines motifs from famous landscapes of the American West. Ubisoft names Yosemite, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Sequoia, Canyonlands and Grand Teton. Mountains, forests and canyons are arranged as one connected sports park, not as a geographically scaled replica.

The Riders Ridge is the social hub. From there you can find activities, organise your career and meet other riders. The space between competitions is also a play area to explore and for spontaneous rides.

German language and controls

Riders Republic offers German menus, German subtitles and German voice audio on Steam. English and French are also voiced. On PC, mouse, keyboard and controller are supported, though Ubisoft recommends a controller.

The game supports single-player and online competitions. From Dec 9, 2026, the Nomad mode allows most of the solo content without an internet connection. Online competitions and social features remain connected.

Studios and standalone brand

Ubisoft Annecy led development of Riders Republic. The current Steam page also names Ubisoft Belgrade, Ubisoft Kyiv, Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Odesa. Ubisoft Entertainment appears as publisher.

Ubisoft announced the game in 2020 as a new brand. Riders Republic is a standalone extreme sports game, not an expansion of Steep. Its concept is shaped by combining several sports in a shared online world, along with the later BMX and skate expansions.

Nomad mode: single-player without internet

From Dec 9, 2026, large parts of Riders Republic can be played without an internet connection. The Nomad mode allows free riding through the game world, progress in single-player careers and the search for landmarks and collectibles. Your character can also be customised offline.

When a connection is available again, offline progress is synced with your online save. The shop, season progress, sponsors, multiplayer matches and player-created events remain tied to an internet connection.
