What is WARRIORS OROCHI 4?

WARRIORS OROCHI 4 is a Musou action game by Koei Tecmo. In this fantasy crossover, characters from Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors fight against large enemy armies. Players switch between heroes, combine quick attacks and complete battlefield objectives. The original game offers 170 playable characters.

A key new element is the Sacred Treasures: magic artefacts that enable attacks beyond ordinary weapons. The later Ultimate Upgrade adds another storyline and additional modes, but is not a standalone fifth platform release.

Steam lists the PC launch as Oct 15, 2018. The European versions for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch followed on Oct 19, 2018; console versions appeared earlier in North America. For Germany, Nintendo also lists Oct 19 on the Switch cartridge.

The Ultimate expansion was released in Europe on Feb 14, 2020. The Ultimate Edition bundles the original base game and the expansion, while the Ultimate Upgrade Pack is offered specifically for owners of the first version. Additional content should not be confused with a standalone new game.

Platforms

The game was released for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Steam lists the PC version, while the developer's site lists all four systems it was originally released on. On Nintendo Switch, the title is listed as Switch software, not as a title developed separately for Switch 2.

Running the PS4 and Xbox One versions on later hardware must be kept separate from native versions. There are four base game versions; edition packs and DLC are not additional platform releases.

Gameplay

The focus is on large-scale battles with hundreds of enemies. Players form a team of three fighters and can switch their active character during combat. Normal attacks, powerful Musou techniques and reaching changing battlefield objectives work together.

The heroes come from two Koei Tecmo series. The game combines the Japanese Sengoku setting of Samurai Warriors with the characters from Dynasty Warriors and a standalone mythology storyline.

Sacred Treasures and magic system

The divine Sacred Treasures are the special combat system of the fourth game. Alongside normal weapons, characters can use magic attacks that draw on their own energy bar. Normal, charged and individual magic each trigger different effects.

Hits in battle also fill the meter for shared magic. In the Ultimate expansion, artefacts are distributed more flexibly between characters, and Musou Switch Combos extend attack chains.

Co-op and Battle Arena

The Steam version offers local split-screen co-op and online co-op. Nintendo lists two players on one system and up to six players online. In Battle Arena mode, two teams of three players each compete against each other and try to capture key strongholds.

This online arena is different from the story battles. Features and membership requirements depend on the respective platform store.

Story, Battle Arena and Infinity Mode

In story mode, missions unlock one after another and the crossover's plot continues. Battle Arena is a standalone online mode: three players face three others and fight for control of strongholds. Its goals therefore differ from the regular story battles.

The Ultimate Upgrade adds Infinity Mode. In its towers, you need to recruit new allies, meet conditions and collect rare materials. Its progression rules differ from the normal story mode.

Weapons, growth and abilities

Between battles, players improve their heroes and equipment. Characters gain experience, weapons can be upgraded and traits adjusted. Players who use several characters benefit from their different reach, attack types and magic abilities.

In the Ultimate expansion, crafting for the Infinity Challenges takes this further: rare materials are used to create powerful weapons. The system is aimed at players who want to fight beyond the main story.

Languages and playability on PC

Steam lists English on-screen text and subtitles, plus Japanese voice audio. Several other Asian text languages are also supported. German menus and German voice audio are not listed on Steam. This is worth noting given the detailed crossover story.

The PC version offers local or split-screen play and online modes alongside single-player features. Which specific multiplayer features are available may differ between platforms.

Game series

Developed and published by Koei Tecmo Games, the series brings together heroes from Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors in a shared fantasy world. Characters from both stories do not fight in a historically accurate era here, but against threats from a shared mythology.

The responsible development team, Omega Force, is best known for large-scale Musou battles. Ultimate expands the fourth game from 2020, but does not replace the original game and is not a new main chapter of the series.
