Platforms

Shin chan: Shiro and the Coal Town is available natively on Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS and Android. The smartphone versions came out on May 21, 2025 via Crunchyroll Game Vault. According to Neos, users there need a matching Crunchyroll Mega or Ultimate subscription; the distribution model cannot be swapped for a Steam or console key.

The separate Nintendo Switch 2 version is due out on March 4, 2027. For Switch 2, a single digital download, a digital twin pack and, in Europe, a physical two-game card with Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation have been announced. Owners of digital original Switch editions are set to get a discount on the new download, not a promised free upgrade.

Gameplay

The two places invite different activities. In the countryside, Shin chan and his family look after vegetables, discover fish and beetles and collect their finds. In the coal town, railway tracks, tinkerers and workshops shape everyday life. Dishes, inventions and upgrades for the lorries are made from collected ingredients and materials.

The game focuses on a relaxed exploration pace with small stories and mini-games. Combat or management systems in the style of large city-building simulations are not the centre of the game.

Holidays with the family in Akita

Between visits to the coal town, Shinnosuke and his family help out in the countryside. His grandmother shows him how to grow vegetables, and new varieties become available through further harvests. The surroundings provide fish, insects and other finds. The quiet village life contrasts with the busy parallel world.

A coal town with its own workshop culture

People in the namesake coal town work with peculiar machines. Residents run a tavern and inventors' workshops, among other things. Shin chan helps develop new dishes and builds practical inventions from collected materials. This opens up tasks of its own that go well beyond collecting natural items.

Competitions on rails

A recurring mini-game is the Lorry Races. The vehicles differ in speed and handling. With extra parts you can tune a lorry, for example for better cornering or more effective moves against rivals. New tracks and more challengers provide long-term collecting and play goals.

iPhone and Android via Crunchyroll Game Vault

Neos has released the adventure for iPhone, iPad and Android in the Crunchyroll Game Vault since May 21, 2025. According to the publisher, this version is part of the game lineup for certain paid Crunchyroll memberships and is not included in the regional availability mentioned above for Japan and China. The mobile versions support German on-screen text, among other languages; specific device support is described in the respective App Store listing.

Buying the Nintendo Switch or PC version therefore does not automatically include the mobile version. Likewise, the new Switch 2 announcement confirms neither cross-platform save transfer nor a free additional license.
