What is Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2?

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is the sequel to Auroch Digital's retro first-person shooter. The single-player game picks up directly from the story of the first Boltgun and sends players once again against the Chaos forces of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Fast shootouts, short melee attacks, large enemy groups and a deliberately pixelated retro look form the core.

New features include two characters with different weapons and movement techniques, a branching campaign with more than 30 levels, and additional navigation and accessibility options. The sequel is not a remaster or an expansion of the original.

Branching single-player campaign

The campaign includes more than 30 levels and several possible routes. On the different planets, players choose different paths. A single run therefore does not automatically go through all locations.

The branches connect different environments and challenges. The story includes the fight against the Chaos forces under Vashtorr.

Malum Caedo and Nyra Veyrath play differently

Malum Caedo returns as a Space Marine with a boltgun and chainsword. The sword can also enable a quick attack toward an enemy. Frag grenades and the enhanced attack technique Obliterating Charge are part of his toolkit.

The new addition is Sororita Nyra Veyrath. She uses, among other things, a power sword and bolt pistol, moves quickly through the arenas with the Fervent Slide, and can take on especially heavy targets with a melta bomb. The characters therefore differ not only in appearance but in mobility, weapons and combat rhythm.

Weapons and movement

Boltgun 2 focuses on fast firefights, evasive movement and melee attacks. Depending on the character, different techniques are available, including bolter, flamethrower, shotgun and energy weapons.

Enemy groups and bosses require characters to keep moving and use weapons at short or long range. Malum Caedo and Nyra Veyrath differ in speed and armament.

The four Chaos factions

More than 40 new enemy types from the four major Chaos factions fight against Malum Caedo and Nyra Veyrath. Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch and Slaanesh bring their own enemies into the shooter. Besides cultists and daemons, heavy creatures also await.

The bosses attack with different patterns and require switching deliberately between dodging, movement and counterattacks.

The Death Korps of Krieg join the fight

Unlike the first game, Malum Caedo does not fight alone everywhere. On selected planets, soldiers of the Death Korps of Krieg are to fight by his side against the Chaos forces. These allies are part of the announced scenarios of the single-player campaign.

The involvement of allied NPCs is not proof of co-op or a multiplayer mode. The game is still officially listed as a single-player shooter.

An automap shows areas already visited and current objectives. In addition, an optional navigation helper points the way to the next objective. Both features make it easier to find your way around sprawling arenas and the branching routes of the campaign.

Players who prefer to explore levels without aids can turn off route guidance.

German on-screen text, but English voice audio

Steam offers German interface and subtitles as well as other text languages. A fully German voice-over is not offered there; the voice recordings are listed in English. The PC version supports Steam achievements and cloud saves and is listed as a single-player experience.

Age ratings and console-specific options may differ from the store listings. The official PlayStation page, for example, lists its own accessibility options and DualSense vibration.
