Privateer 2: The Darkening – the restored space simulation
In Privateer 2: The Darkening – 30th Anniversary Edition, you explore the three star systems of the Tri-System as Ser Arris. After a spaceship accident, he wakes up without memories and is drawn into a web of smugglers, mercenaries and shady employers. Between battles, trade and investigations, you decide for yourself how to finance your survival.
Electronic Arts released the technically restored PC version on November 5, 2026. It is based on the 1996 space combat role-playing game with an open trading economy and elaborate live-action film sequences. Unlike a commercial deluxe bundle, this version has its own Steam app and technically revised executable game content.
Trade, fly and fight in space
You can acquire, upgrade and repair different ships. Cargo prices change depending on the planet; whoever buys and sells profitably can afford better equipment, additional pilots or new weapons. In addition, numerous missions, dangerous fights with pirates and encounters in space stations, bars and other locations await.
The story continues in film scenes with actors such as Clive Owen, Christopher Walken and John Hurt. After the events of the attack on a hospital, Arris tries to find out why unknown enemies are hunting him and what lies behind his past.
Over a hundred film scenes restored
For the 30th Anniversary Edition, the EA team, together with the original Cinematics Director and members of the Wing Commander community, reworked more than 100 FMV sequences from rediscovered master tapes. Alongside the near-original version, you can choose a color-revised Director’s Cut. An optional image upscaling additionally provides sharper video display.
The integrated Privateer 2 Enhancement Patch improves frame rate, gamepad and joystick controls, and the integration of the restored videos, among other things. The new subtitles for English, German, French and Spanish make the film sequences easier to follow. Reference cards and historical manuals are included as bonus material and are not separately available DLCs.
System requirements and download
The PC version is natively listed for Windows 10. According to Steam, it requires a 1.8 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, a DirectX 9.0c-capable graphics card and 10 GB of free storage space. German, English, French and Spanish are supported for interface, audio and subtitles according to Steam. The game is available on Steam as well as via GOG and the EA app; new native console versions are not confirmed.
